as I looked outside my bathroom window this morning, a sense of mystery shrouded the earth as a thick mist enveloped the surrounding landscape.. I quickly washed my hands and rushed back to my room and hurriedly grabbed my clothes to dress.. the dog waited at the front door, anticipating and anxious for the 'click' of the leash.. a brief check of the outside temps showed a balmy 1 deg. celcius.. dressed and ready to go I opened the door, my nostrils were immediately assaulted with the pungent smell of smoke the gentle breeze carried from a distant burning wood stove.. apprehensively, I crossed the threshold, gently closing the door behind me..
I carefully walked down the long, slightly slippery, driveway towards the main road, my glasses immediately covered in the morning mist, I stopped.. glancing in either direction at the highway that eerily disappeared into the thick haze and listened.. all was quiet except for the sound of a lone bird crooning it's discontent.. crossing the road, the dog became watchful at every rustling leaf and broken twig of the wooded forest.. skittish and on high alert.. she became as motionless as I, as we gazed at the lone doe, idly enjoying a morning meal of the dewy vegetation, just feet away. She looked up and we all stood transfixed, staring into each others eyes, until the snap of a twig startled the doe, and sent her off deeper into the woods, bounding with graceful speed.. the dog and I stood quietly as we watched her leap away.. only to see a small feral cat, moments later, appear where the doe had just been.. sniffing at the air and earth under paw.. the dog perked up, ready to chase, and I laughed softly while giving the command to 'leave it' as we continued along our path, disappearing into the enveloping fog.
and that's just one of the reasons.. I love where I live!
