Sprinklers, on a motion sensor.

Cover door, handle and porch with a couple of gallons of stage blood (Karo syrup based)... the sticky goo will deter even the most stalwart. Just be sure you have a pressure washer for clean up on Dia De Los Muertos.

I had to stop using flour for tricks, turns out that it becomes highly flammable and somewhat explosive when exposed to open flame. It actually rained pumpkin bits over a 1/4 mile area. Don't ask.

Get some 'rotten eggs' stink stuff from a magic/gag shop and spread liberally on the door.

All kinds of shaving cream cannons, or whip cream and paper plates..

My favorite were the air powered slime cannons. pitchfork

Coupled with the strobe lights, video projection, eerie music, 7 fog machines and about a dozen of us in costume waiting to pounce...

We were the hottest stop in the neighborhood.

I miss those days. My little town now only has "Trunk Or Treat" in the small downtown area. It's lame.

I used to spend about 5 weeks prepping and building.

I have three large dogs,
that tends to limit visitors to my house... For any reason.

.... people in the neighborhood are already asking.... what's going to be new this year.... one resident even commented... on how this year their child was going to make it all the way up to the front door...aww.... so I know how you feel.... brother.... I would ask why you no longer decorate...stan... but I won't... I imagine there are reasons..drinker

Super simple stage blood:

Karo Clear corn syrup. (any brand will work, I've just always used Karo)
White flour
Red food coloring. (There are several shades, darker for venal/dried blood, brighter red for arterial, especially for splatter)
Water

Pour Karo syrup into a mixing bowl, slowly stir in a small amount of flour. The idea is to make it semi-opaque. Add in food coloring to desired shade. Note: You can add green or blue food coloring to the red to darken.

Add water to thin the mixture and add more volume if needed. I use a measuring cup and or sprayer bottle for splatter effects.

Note: IT is VERY STICKY, once dried, can be most difficult to get out of hair.

The thicker the mix (add more flour) the better it looks on axe blades, garden shears or any other prop. It will run and ooze slowly down surfaces too.

Soap and hot water clean up. For exteriors, a pressure washer is ideal.

We used to do a play for the kids, more like a short show. My ex was a light & sound tech, so we had plenty of special effects, we also had a smoke machine. Different freaky sounds all around the house (speakers in open windows, even in the cat-flap. Having a small computer network helped)

Once we had a staff with a enormously bright light-bulb on it, but we covered it with feathers. It had a trigger, f*** knows how he did it, but if you'd use it, pretending to angrily pound it on the street, there'd be unreal bright lightning and thunder so loud, it must have rattled windows throughout the entire village laugh Freaked everyone out the first time, kids and adults alike, lol.

I'd write the story and take care of our outfits and make-up and any other props we'd need, as he'd be busy with the light & sound stuff.
We were always the last stop. So we had nothing much to do all evening, and then the entire village would be on our doorstep, including the adults laugh Ppl in the back couldn't really see what we'd be doing, so we usually did our 'show' some 3 times

Must admit I miss those Halloweens. This year I won't be doing anything. Last year I did, but it was the 1st time they'd ever do Halloween in this village. So the kids didn't have the slightest idea what it's about. Some kid said "Why don't you just hand out the candy? That's what everybody else does!"
Well, sod it then. I'm not just gonna hand out free candy without having some fun. shades
