Can anyone tell me what you'd call the angled piece of wood between the post and ceiling? The bit that stabilized and supports the whole lot? All I can find it 'bracket' or 'brace' but is that the right word?
Gallow bracket??? Help please!

Golly, Crystal...had to pull out my dad's building code books; I find 'BRACE' is the proper word for that even when it's supporting the main rafter to a load bearing wall it might be called a purlin but most 'Rough In' carpenters don't call it that!

LOL ... well, if you were bored ... haha.
Driving me up the wall, brace, bracket, purlin, strut ... my head is spinning. Good thing I'm not in construction, lol. I'd just call it an 'angled piece of wood' laugh
I'll stick to brace I spose.

Thanks for looking!

Well, at least his old books had blue print drawings/plans to look at so I could see what was different between an 'inside wall/load bearing/or exterior wall'...lots of detail wording there! LOL
No - not bored so much as reading/research distracts me from severe joint pain: weaning myself off of pain meds is tasking!

I think the term you are looking for is called a "gusset" or "gusset beam", or "gusset brace".

Or a "buttress".

Thank you, I think gusset brace it will be, haha.

@ Leigh, you don't wanna know what I'm up to, lol.
And yeah, sitting out there together with a drink and a smoke ... nice! But don't start smoking again!!

The yellow was what I had left over after doing 1 wall in my crystal room upstairs. So it's not proper outdoor wall paint. But didn't want to spend money on an old brick shed. I done the other side with aqua indoor wall paint, been on there for a good 2 years now, and it's still okay (knock on wood!).

It's bright, but a he|| of a lot better than the white with cement spatters all over it, haha. And I'm a colourful person, I  coloured walls.

No worries about the smoking...Hardest habit I ever had to break!smokin ...I will never risk lighting one up again, but for me it was a social thing and I will always miss that part of it...What I do now when I'm sharing a drink with friends who smoke is bum one of their's to hold and pretend but never lightlaugh laugh ...Sounds funny I know, but it works for me!!

Lol ... a thingy that holds all up? Hahaha, tell me, do buildings under your care often collapse upon themselves?

Looking at the pile of rubble...
- Boss man No1: Okay just WHO the he|| ffed up here? Didn't I tell you to put the thingy that holds it all up in place?!

- Guilty bugger: yes, but, boss.. I put in the I beam..

- Boss man No1: Not the I beam, idiot, I said the thingy that holds it all up! Are you stupid or something?!

- Guilty bugger: Yes, but... the I beam does....

hold it all up, don't it?

Oh, what the heck do I know about construction... my garage is held up by a shoring jack in one corner... My ex wants it back noway
He can have his old microwave back, but not the shoring jack! pitchfork

Oh, those darned things... Sometimes they break and I don't notice... the other day one end was poking through the fabric into my boob ... I was busy gardening, bent over all the time.. so pressing on that horribly sharp piece of steel. I didn't notice till I took it off to shower ohwell Bras can be real torture devices

I have heard these bracing structures called support beams or support trusses.

Gee, I am surprised I didn't get an email on this one.

The formal technical term in the US would be a "knee brace".

Buttress is not accurate and refers to something different.

I have found that some structural items in different countries have different names, so locally it may be called some other kind of brace, but it is still a brace.

A buttress, or a flying buttress, is a stiffening member that transfers horizontal forces into the foundation.

Lol, Angels have eyes and ears everywhere!

But ... tell me what I can do with the jack ... post ... but please be a mite more specific than "Holdy up thingy" ... I don't fancy the garage collapsing upon my sky-clad body ...
