Virginia high school nixes 'white guilt' video after criticism
Published February 12, 2016

Parents outraged over school's racial discourse

An animated film designed as a lesson in “racial discourse” for students at a Virginia high school will not be shown after it made students uncomfortable and drew criticism from parents who called it “white guilt.”

The video was shown at Glen Allen High School in Henrico during two assemblies for Black History Month and depicts several runners on a track, with black runners facing insurmountable obstacles while white runners are unimpeded.

Officials said in a statement Tuesday that the video, “The Unequal Opportunity Race,” was a presentation involving “American history and racial discourse.” They added, “A segment of the video was one component of a thoughtful discussion in which all viewpoints were encouraged. As always, we are welcoming of feedback from students and their families, and we address concerns directly as they come forward.”

Henrico County Superintendent Patrick C. Kinlaw acknowledged Wednesday that the video may not have been the best way to deliver a lesson in “racial discourse.”

"While we as educators do not object to difficult and constructive conversations about American history and racial discourse past and present, we understand why many people feel this video in particular was not the best way to deliver such an important lesson," Kinlsaw said in the statement.

Don Blake, whose daughter attended the assembly where the video was shown, said Wednesday that someone should be held accountable for the way the video was presented.

“They are sitting there watching a video that is dividing them up from a racial standpoint. It’s a white guilt kind of video,” Blake told WWBT.

Luke Harris, co-founder of the African-American Policy Forum, which created the video, told The Washington Post that the video was produced for "elementary and secondary schools or in college studies courses."

"We found that the video has a huge impact on the people that we're showing it to," said Harris, who is also an associate professor of political science at Vassar College. "Most of us know very little about the social history of the United States and its contemporary impact. It was designed as a tool to throw light on American history."

Administrators across the district have been instructed not to use the video, said school board chairwoman Michelle Ogburn in a statement. She apologized to those who were offended.

"In addition, steps are being taken to prevent the use of racially divisive materials in the future," Ogburn said.

The video comes four months after a student mistakenly played a song over the public address system before a football game that was a racist parody of the "DuckTales" theme song.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

See Racism. See John See Racism. Get Some #WhitePrivilegeGlasses

Rev. Dr. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite Professor of Theology, Chicago Theological Seminary

Empathy is a profound religious virtue. It is the effort we make to try to see the world from another person's perspective.

Sometimes empathy could use a little boost. Suppose, when it comes to racism, that I as a white person had some glasses that would help me see the world, and be seen, as an African American. Would that help build empathy and the compassionate conviction to make change?

Let's see. I mean, let's really see.

Chicago Theological Seminary has made a video, seen above, to show what happens when you put on your #WhitePrivilegeGlasses and are able to see what happens when you are not white.

Oh, no, you may say. I'm past all that. I don't even see race. That is a common reaction among White Americans when the subject of White Privilege comes up.

Maybe you don't see race, but one clear message of the CTS campaign is, "Race sees you." Who I am as a white person occupies every social, political, economic, religious and personal space I occupy. And trust me, whether I want it or not, my whiteness takes up a lot of space.

So? I didn't ask for that, thank you very much.

It doesn't matter. You can't resign from white privilege. It is in the very warp and woof of the fabric of American society, and has been for centuries. Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and African-American Studies at Colby College, once gave a lecture to a class we team-taught at Chicago Theological Seminary. She drew a line on the board. "That," she said, "is the European-African axis." Then she put European above the line, and African below it. Cheryl documented over and over through examples from law, custom, religion, economics, and politics that the European-African axis is the basic structure of American society.

Now, as people of other races and cultures immigrate to the U.S., they are often shocked to find they are assigned a place above or below that line. In fact, a Muslim philosopher friend of mine pointed out to me that after 9/11, many Muslim professionals were shocked to find out they weren't white. As skilled professionals who had immigrated to the United States in a very different climate, they had mostly not experienced the kind of wholesale prejudice against Muslims that began immediately after 9/11 and is still going on today.

These and other issues of how #WhitePrivilege works in and through American society are included in a CTS discussion guide. In this guide, we can see how #WhitePrivilege separates and arranges us all in a hierarchy that is systematically hidden from whites and all too visible to African Americans who suffer from it every day.

See racism. Confront racism. Eliminate racism.

White vs. Whiteness (defined)

White, as a term describing people, refers to light skinned people of European descent.

Whiteness refers to the construction of the white race, white culture, and the system of privileges and advantages afforded to white people in the U.S. (and across the globe) through government policies, media portrayal, decision-making power within our corporations, schools, judicial systems, etc.

WhiteNESS History Month..

This is NOT like the other FOUR history months. This is an extension of " White Guilt", turned "White Privilege", turned " WhiteNESS".

Smfh.. I think it is time, if it isn't too damn late.. that we as Americans.. start to think about the 'divide & conquer' that is going on, before we are all screwed.
