Have you ever had someone you admired, even wanted to emulate growing up... then, years later, find out they weren't who you thought they were..and, in fact, did something absolutely horrid? I don't mean celebrities...I mean people in your real life.
I found out about someone late last night all because of some innocent Googling...I'll try to keep this as short as I can but some back story is important IMO...

In my teens, 20s, and 30s, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to hunt some very Hallowed property in the MS/LA area. A friend of mine was a member of a hunting club established on this property and I would go quite often as his guest.
The owner of this property was the consumate Southern man. Larger than life, cordial, polite, but tough and hard edged when need be...what, as a teen, I perceived as a man's man....for sake of this post I'll call him Mr.X.
Now Mr. X wasn't always on the property as he lived a couple hours away, so his son actually ran the day to day business....but, I fondly remember when Mr. X would show up....and all the other members, all grown men with status in their respective communities....would go out of their way to greet Mr. X, shake his hand, and basically fawn all over him.
Now Mr, X died in the 90s doing what he loved...working on his land
Fast fwd to last night. My friend had gotten out of this club several years ago and he and I had grown apart..he had gotten married had kids, etc....
But I was curious about that property last night... after all, I had spent MANY wonderful days there....so I googled Mr.X and his son in search of any info on the property...and I found Mr.X....in an investigative article about a reopened cold case where two black teens were murdered by the KKK in 1964.
Seems the two terms were hitchhiking in 1964 and we're picked up by a cpl of local KKKs in a town near Mr.Xs home. These kluckers tied the teens to a tree and mercilessly beat them until they thought they were dead.
Having to now deal with the supposedly dead bodies, the kluckers called another klucker to help with the disposal....THAT klucker turned out to be Mr.X.
The bodies were loaded into the tarp lined trunk of an old car that Mr.X had owned and driven away to that property Mr.X owned. ...they were then loaded in a boat to be dumped in the river.
But Mr. X and his partner noticed something...the two teens were actually still alive. Not wanting to get any more blood in the boat by shooting the teens first....weights were unceremoniously tied to them and they were thrown overboard alive.

Now all this was told by an FBI informant describing what was told to him....but there were enough internet articles telling the ssme story so I believe it to be true...and the partner was convicted of the murders in 2007.

But it blows my mind now...just finding all of this out...and that place I just adored for so many years....has instantly lost its luster....and that man I looked up to...isn't who I thought he was....to the point of actually turning my stomach.

Have you ever had any thing similar happen?

What's really strange is that I had seen a documentary on the murders a few years ago. The bother of one of the victims and filmmaker made the documentary in hopes it would open the case...and it did.
I didn't see it for what it was then because the location of the murders and the dumping ground were quite a distance apart and the the documentary never mentioned the dumping ground by name..nor did it mention Mr.X....only that a cpl of KKK miners dumped the body.
I guess only after the case was reopened were the names revealed.

Nothing even remotely like that. All I can offer in response, is that I have read a lot about serial killers and other sociopaths, and it is very common for them to appear to be wonderful gregarious and friendly people, when they are not immediately involved with actually killing someone. Sometimes even then.

Thinking back now...there was always something about him...sure, he was plenty nice enough, as I said in the OP, very cordial....but in the back of my head, something always told me he wasn't a man you wanted to cross...he just put that feeling into you somehow.

Horrible story that.

I went to school with a guy who's name we will say is Steven.
He was a bit of a nutter in school to be honest. A petty thief and a bully who no one liked. He was only there for around a year or so before he got kicked out of our school and got put in a young offenders institution.

So about 15 years ago there was a double murder, but it was in the south of the UK, miles from me. An old couple had been burgled and both been stabbed to death and the murderer had set the house on fire to try and cover his tracks.
On the news a few days later the police charged a guy and it was this Steven guy from school.
Sent shivers up my spine to think I was in the same class as him.
I would never have believed he was capable of something so gruesome despite his behaviour in school.

This is a very disturbing story Reb. I can imagine your shock and disappointment.

For me, I think I've had friends who I thought were above certain temptations or frailties only to find out that they had attempted suicide, or had affairs etc.... But nothing as horrific as what you described Reb frown

Joe
That's wild...I've had old classmates show up in the newspaper for arrests for drugs or burglary etc.... but not for murder...yet lol.

Ms. Peggy
Oh yea I've had those friends who have been caught cheating or have had wild sex lives exposed....I'd be like "Dayum....who knew they were that FREAKY!" laugh

As far as my OP...Im not sitting here hurt by it....I really don't know what I am....a combo of things I guess...surprised, disgusted, dumbfounded, and just plain feeling dumb because I didn't realize how this person was at the time. Maybe it's just because of what I found out last night.
There was talk that one of the bodies was weighted down with an engine block off of an old Jeep. I saw several old Jeeps on that property throughout my many visits...and a cpl without engines...and was told they were used for parts.
Other articles I saw mentioned that the boat used to dump the bodies was actually a small barge. I have crossed from the levee to that property MANY times on an old barge. Was it the same one used to carry the bodies? I dont know, but it sure is creepy.
I know where the landing is where that barge would move people and equipment to the property. Did I float over the spot where the bodies were dumped? Again, Idk...but again, creepy as hell.

Well.. back in elementary school our principal.. of the school was this very nice..Man.. my friends and myself were always getting sent to the office for being in trouble.. our principal would punish us by sending us to the store to buy candy.. little toffees called Mojo's..love them!!..mmhmm.. he used to keep a jar of them on his desk...
We thought he was the best principal ever...well.. one day I felt very ill.. and was sent to the nurses station.. she checked my temperature give me a aspirin and told me to lay down on the couch for a little while... shortly after she left the room... and who would you know entered the room shortly after.?.yup.. the principal the man we all thought was the nicest person in the world...
Boy!!.. were we wrong..lol.. well!. he thought he would take it upon himself to see how I was feeling.. he checked my forehead for a fever.. and then began to see if I was tender around my tummy area..wink wink.. he unbuttoned my trousers... so he could do a thorough inspection.. now at that moment I began to feel very uncomfortable.. with what he was doing ,and was about to get up and bolt for the door.. but luckily just then the school nurse came back in the room... the principal excused himself..
I personally Shrugged it off as.. okay the principal is now on my creepy list.lol.. and didn't think any more of it..
Now.. many years later I ran into a school friend.. my best friend back then ..we went to the same school..
Well after a few drinks we started reminiscing and I brought up my experience in the nurse's office to him..
I could tell he was uncomfortable he was white as a ghost.. after hearing my story... he thenconfided to me.. that he had a similar experience but wasn't so lucky the Nurse did not come back in the room...yup..... I was shocked and a little upset to hear his story.. first I felt horrible for him carrying this around all these years..
But then I became angry with him and said we were best friends!! why did you never tell me about this... he had no real answer just said he was scared to say anything....

I do have one other "not who you thought they were story".....I'm beginning to feel a lil white trashy though laugh

I have an older brother who had a high school friend who cam around the house alot...seemed to be a pretty good guy.
Later in life he ended up owning a local hardware store that eventually burned up in a fire. There was some talk that he started it for the insurance money but no charges were ever filed
Anyway, several years later his wife was murdered at his hunting camp and it was pretty big story here. His story was that some folks at a gas station followed them to his camp and shot her there. He even drove her body into the nearby town crying and making a huge scene.
The truth came out though...he had driven with her to the camp under the guise of getting some items out of the camp and returning home. She stayed in the vehicle while he went in to supposedly retrieve the items. Instead, he went in the camp, snuck out the back, circled thru the woods behind the vehicle, and shot the wife in the back.
On the drive back to town, he tossed the rifle off of a bridge but instead of landing in the water, it landed on a dry sand bar. He ended up being convicted and is now in Angola. A lot of stuff came out in the trial...he did it for the life insurance money and had a secret girlfriend at a local college.
Another turn of events....at his wife's funeral, am elderly attendee suffered a heart attack in the cemetery an died as a result. I happened to work that call while with the fire dept. Just weird all the way around.

Told ya it was white trashy laugh
