There is much debate in the Wiccan community about "true Wicca". After all, it is a religion created by a man based on the ancient practices/beliefs of Paganism. Wicca works very well for a lot of people. But, just like any other religion there are a lot of people who follow it but don't buy into or practice all of it. These people still call themselves Wiccan and that bothers some of the more fundamentalist Wiccans. Just like "real Catholics" don't care for "cafeteria Catholics".

I'm a take out eat in Catholic.

Boldogasszony

A Hungarian virgin-goddess and patroness of mother and child, and of birth. Her name means "happy mistress", but she is also called Nagy (boldog)asszony ("big mistress") or Kis (boldog)asszony ("little mistress"). With the advent of Christianity she was syncretized with the Virgin Mary.

I think this process of "syncretization" with various Goddesses took place quite often. Especially with Mary. I believe also with Isis in Egypt. It was difficult to totally suppress such a heavy duty female deity. So when it was not possible, there were attempts made at melding. You see this influence in Catholicism. Mary very often can be overpowering even over the male imagery in their Cathedrals. Not always of course but I have seen it more than once. Especially when I was down in Louisiana.

Ive heard The "virgin" Mary described as "the last stand" of the Goddess. Probably a very accurate classification for her.

Yes I think you are definitely right there as far as the Goddess Bridget. She was beloved by the Celts and integral in their Pagan worship for thousands of years prior to the advent of Christianity. She was actually one of the very first Goddesses I discovered and I attribute that in part to her high profile nature both in Europe and the US. My suspicion of Ireland in particular is that it is/was heavily steeped in Fairy mythology and folklore. Its appears to me that a "tarp of Christianity" was thrown over it. Catholicism in particular. It only requires one to dig a little deeper in order surface the underlying facets of their spiritual roots.
