The lyrics speak of the downfall of an unfaithful lover. Ironically, lead vocalist Walter Scott was murdered in 1983 by his second wife, JoAnn, and her lover, James Williams (Williams was the actual killer. JoAnn was convicted of collusion). Williams was also convicted of murdering Scott's first wife, Sharon.

Walter Scott's body was found in 1987, hog-tied, shot in the back, and floating face-down in a cistern that had been covered over with a decorative planter.

As I mentioned before, I'm a purist, and it's rather uncommon for me to enjoy remakes of classic masterpieces, but I must say that Juice Newton did this song a lot of justice, with a bit more of a bluesy, torch-song feel.
