ok. So are we going with the songs being a hit ONLY for the original artists. One time, but covers don't count??

If I recall, that cover got relatively high in the charts when Huey redid it.

Okay....ya wanna talk semantics....the song was originally written and performed by Bobby Day. Thurston Harris recorded (covered) it FIRST in 1957, reaching #6 on the charts, and it was his one and only hit, not to mention the most popular version. Whoever recorded it afterwards, and however high it went on the charts (none of the other covers ever surpassed Harris' version) is irrelevant. The thread is about One Hit Wonders, not how many people covered a particular song.

It wasn't semantics. It was a valid question because there were some songs that got higher in the charts as a cover than they did originally.

I was simply asking whether it was the song itself, or the artist that brought it into One Hit Wonder territory.drinker

Yes, I got where you were going with that. I was simply stating that while Thurston Harris' version technically can be called a cover, it's still basically an original, as few people ever heard the original Bobby Day version, and it was the only hit Harris ever had. It just happened to become the most popular and well-known version. Ironically, anybody else who recorded it and had any amount of success with it (Frankie Lymon, Clyde McPhatter, Jackson Five, Cliff Richard, Huey Lewis, The Doobie Brothers, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, Frankie Avalon, The Dovells, Dave Clark Five, The Paramounts, Allman Brothers, Wayne Cochran, Doobie Brothers, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Delbert McClinton, Aaron Carter, Billy Gilman, etc., etc., etc.,..........) is pretty much a cover of Harris' cover.

Didja follow all that?

Earlier posters who dissed 4 Non Blonds & Midnight Oil as 1 hit wonders obviously don't regularly listen to an alternative music channel. The Blonds also had Spaceman, Bless the Beast & Children & Dear Mr. President amongst others. They had more success across the pond. I did find 1 link for Spaceman.

Midnight Oil also had Blue Sky Mining, Power & the Passion, Forgotten Years, Red Sails in the Sunset & others.
