NEW YORK - Peter Steele, the driving force behind the Brooklyn-based goth/metal quartet Type O Negative, died Wednesday of apparent heart failure. He was 48.

Known for his vampiric good looks, morbid sense of humor and rich baritone, the singer/bassist was the author of such metal classics as "Christian Woman;" "Black No. 1;" "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend;" and the recent "September Sun."

Born in 1962, Steele played in a number of hardcore bands around his native Brooklyn before starting Carnivore, a controversial thrash band whose overt sarcasm and nihilistic views were the genesis for his most enduring and successful project, Type O Negative.

They did this as a publicity stunt a few years ago in 05 to promote a new album, but I think this time its for real.

i kinda saw this coming, as i set my ex up with him, and he was still doing cocaine at the time, unbenownst to me, until i talked to her about it. they got along great, but too many drugs for her to watch (she didn't do them), so she split....

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favorite bands, and this makes me so sad. God I loved his voice, and I love this band. Goof is so sad now.

I have been jamming to Type O since I read the news. This effin sucks! Everything Dies.....

i knew dead again was going to be their final album, for he was working more on carnivore, and Kenny, Josh, and Johnny had had enough....

Sadly expected, wasn't it? Hopefully he isn't as tortured now as he was in life. Go easy, Mr. Steele.

Yea it does im just so glad i got to see them as many times as i have and had the oppertunity to meet them at least once but still

yeah, they were the sh|t, and i built the chill room in New Orleans from their influence, or you may remember it better by the name mausoleum with twenty three neolithic and modern ruins coming out of the walls, that got cut short by Katrina..... did you see the jerry springer episode?

Oh wow yea the springer episode he was in i think i still have it some where i recorded on vhs lmao makes me wanna dig through all my stuff i know i have tons of posters, tapes (vhs) of them and my pics of the shows ive been to
