a couple of years ago i was in Memphis at BB kings bar, the house band finished their set and were about to take a break when they were stopped by this guy who just walked up on stage to announce to everyone that we were all in for a treat.
a minute later the band was joined by BB King they did two songs and BB asked for his friends to come join him...Bono and The Edge came out of nowhere and they blasted out "when love comes to town" and then the Fats Domino song "walkin to new orleans."
that was pretty cool and would have been enough to please most of us, but then Bono starts walking through the crow, comes over to the table behind me and my friends and starts this speech about how this woman was an inspiration to the members of U2 and how he would be honored if she would share the stage with him...
at the moment i had no idea who this woman was. she looked to be in her late 60's and i just figured she was a blues or gospel singer from the area....until she agreed and got on stage. when she sang that first line, i realized we were all seeing something special.
turns out it was Etta James and she absolutely brought the house down with "At last, my love has come along..." omg! she was amazing.
it was a night i will NEVER forget!
even at her age (which i have no idea what that is) her voice was still powerful and crisp
