Love Songs Part 2
I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner
Crazy For You - Madonna
Every Time You Go Away - Paul Young
Saving All My Love For You - Whitney Houston
One More Night - Phil Collins
Sea Of Love - The Honeydrippers
(A band put together by Robert Plant. I love this song every time I hear it.)
You Give Good Love - Whitney Houston
The Search Is Over - Survivor
Missing You - Diana Ross
What About Love - Heart
Penny Lover - Lionel Ritchie
(All of these are from the top 100 of 1985 alone, making it a very popular year for love songs. On my last list I made a mistake Heaven by Bryan Adams is from this year as well. Love songs became a big business in the second half of the 80s due to their success before 1985. As a result, love songs took many forms, from slow to upbeat, from R&B and Soul to Pop to Heavy Metal ballads.)
That's What Friends Are For - Dionne Warwick & Stevie Wonder
(Honestly, listening to this song, it works just as well for a couple as it does as a tribute to good friends.)
I Miss You - Klymaxx
Secret Lovers - Atlantic Starr
Friends & Lovers - Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson
(A rare #1 hit by a Soap actress, written for a couple on Days Of Our Lives.)
Glory Of Love - Peter Cetera
There'll Be Sad Songs - Billy Ocean
Take My Breath Away - Berlin
Sweet Love - Anita Baker
With Or Without You - U2
At This Moment - Billy Vera and The Beaters
Lady in Red - Chris DeBurgh
(The preceding three songs are personal faves, and I love to sing along whenever I hear them.)
(I've Had) The Time Of My Life - Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
The Next Time I Fall - Peter Cetera & Amy Grant
(I Just) Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew
Somewhere Out There - Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram
Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You - Glenn Medeiros
Ballerina Girl - Lionel Ritchie
(This song was actually written for his daughter Nicole to express his emotions as a parent.)
Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlisle
Is This Love - Whitesnake
I'll Always Love You - Taylor Dayne
Every Rose Has It's Thorn - Poison
If You Don't Know Me By Now - Simply Red
Eternal Flame - The Bangles
There are many more. Some popular love songs never made it to the top 100 for the year. In fact, a number of songs Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, and Luther Vandross never broke onto list, though all three were immensely popular.
Many country artists failed to reach the top 100 also. Dolly Parton's version of "I Will Always Love You" from the movie version of "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" in 1982 is regarded by many to be better than Whitney Houston's version based on the tear-jerking emotion Parton evokes rather than the belt-it-out version by Houston. Either way, it is a great song that deserves mention, even though Dolly Parton first wrote and recorded the song in the early 70s.
After double-checking, "Everything I Do, I Do For You" by Bryan Adams was from the very early 90s, though it is by far his best known song.
For a few more ideas, both MTV and VH1 compiled a list of top love songs from the 80s, which I was unable to find online. However, I did find this link which has a number of songs I excluded from my lists but which were also popular here in the US (despite the list being from the UK).
