Usually mead horns tend to be cow horns. I'm sure some have been made out of ram horns though.

I've never seen any with mouthpiece covers. Usually they're used like a glass, rather then a storage flask. The owner may create a stand for them to lean against if they get set down, but usually they're empty. :-)
