For some reason a lot of people I've personally talked to think that music or at least good music need to have lyrics to be good. I disagree, but I can find beauty and art in a lot of things other people i'm around, don't.
A few bands and songs that I personally enjoy without words are:
Motionless - She Got lost In the Observatory.
The End of Science - You Are Dead.
North- Ruins.
Red Sparrowes - I Saw The Sky In the North Open to the Ground and Fire Poured Out.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - East Hastings.
While I can't name singers, composers or the likes from the ideas I'm about to state. It confirms, or maybe contributes is the more proper 'word' to your overall idea.
I, as a hobby, love wasting time playing video games. Of course, I could ultimately state that it is more 'research' based, since ideally, I want to be a writer and some of the greatest story lines and plots aren't found in movies, but in games.
Such of these would be games like Star Ocean, which somehow they mix tragedy, love, and shows the deep perseverance to overcome all forms of trials and tribulations to do more than just 'survive'.
Another is Final Fantasy, take your pick; though some of them may be excluded from the next part of my reply.
Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, and some other great games have beautiful music incorporated throughout them; they give such a realistic 'feel' and 'emotion' to that particular ideal running within the story.
Most of these do not have vocals (which is why I said you may have to eliminate some of the FF Series as they've recently started to add lyrics; though I'm not saying those songs are horrendous, as they are still beautiful they are 'irrelevant at the moment').
Final Fantasy VII, for example, was done using a lot of composed music designed specifically for the game, and those songs, which I adore, have no lyrics. I believe the ShinRa theme was done entirely with a piano; maybe a keyboard of sorts as well; like I've stated, I'm not a musical expert).
So, Vintage, I do agree with you.
I think that lyrics are only required for those who don't have the deep love, admiration, and desire of music like you do; which I think is one of your most beautiful traits. Those who require lyrics are 'missing' the emotion; an emotion they can only find in the words to 'tell' them what this song means.
Without lyrics.. it's what you feel that defines that song; not what you are 'told' to feel. (imo)
