Well, I don't consider myself a geek but I do sew. Mostly have done costumes and tailoring for the military. I want to work on a Medevial dress next.

Enjoy sewing by machine or hand prefer the latter so my machine does not get a lot of use

So supernova; do you have pictures of your sewing projects? I have a couple of my costumes on my profile.

I sew and never thought of myself as a geek. Back then it was norm to be able to sew I guess. Never sewed for profit either.

I made a few outfits in my twenties that I wore and liked altering patterns to design something I thought looked great. To me it did too! Sewed also some of my daughters baby clothes. As well and like you Navygirl, I got into sewing costumes and made a lot for my husband and I and daughter for Halloween dances, or trick or treating when she was in her childhood.

My mom sewed most of my clothes while going through elementary and junior high school (grades 1 - 9). She was very creative in home design as well sewing curtains, and craft items etc. I learnt from her. She did not sew for profit either.

Now a days, I basically use the sewing machine for clothing repairs or for a home project. Last projects were patio door (summer) sheers and (winter) curtains which I alternate seasonally.

As for today, I do not sew much for I have other interests that take up my time and enjoy more.

I don't think supernova is saying people that sew are nerds, I think she's talking about sewing things that are considered nerdy/geeky like costumes for cosplay.

Though I could be wrong.

I wouldn't mind learning to sew.

My favorite blanket is one my grandma made me, it's navy blue and yellow, has moons and stars, and suns. It's fleecy. She made if for me when I was younger and into astronomy.

I don't sew much now but when my daughters (3), were young, I made all of their clothes. Two of them were chubbies and one tall and thin.. I used to make mix and match outfits for the girls, reversible skirts and vests, with pants to match..
I have made several quilts for my gkids. I also am cross stitching a wedding sampler with names and dates and flowers the color of the brides bouquet for my grandson and his bride to be..... I made a cocktail dress for a friend that had a chiffon overlay on the skirt...Never again will work with chiffon...took me forever to hem but it turned out beautiful.. Also made several outfits for my self including a spring coat, a two-piece bathing suit and a velvet dress..

I've machine sewn feed bags to use as tote bags for groceries and water bottles.
The bags are made from woven plastic. They last quite a while.
When I get home, I'll see about posting a pic.

I don't mind the sarcasm I get from the laundry woman every time I bring a couple pants in to have the buttons put back on. But I do mind the fact that she must think I am fat and moves the buttons over so far that the pants are now slipping down at the most inappropriate moments.

I started learning to sew when I was 4 and made just about all my own clothing by jr. high and high school. I haven't made a garment in years but just bought a couple patterns over the weekend, so...

For the past decade, I've been a quilter and even invented a quilting ruler and published books and patterns. People may think it's geeky or nerdy but quilting is a 3.5 billion dollar business in the US, so there must be a lot of us out there doing it! Despite the image, "it ain't your grandma's" quilting anymore.

I used to sew my daughters outfits for when she showed her horse in 4H. She always got a blue ribbon in the best dressed catagory. Also sewed exs cowboy shirts and son and daughters clothes and mine, so much fun and relaxing. Here lately have been considering taking up sewing again as a full time hobby, would love to sew a quilt. Also like to embroider and crossstitch.

This weekend is the International Quilt Festival in Houston. It's an annual event and is the largest convention-type gathering in all of Houston. People come from all over the world and the ENTIRE George Brown Convention center floor is crammed. I'm going on Wednesday only, due to a Mingle Meet in Palo Duro. I'll only see a small portion, even going at top speed through the event...

I like to sew and quilt. Just learning the quilting. Not perfect but then I am not either. Have given most away. But one crazy quilt has my name on it so I am keeping it.

I absolutely love to sew. But mostly I find my passion in quilting. I love to use many shades of color and different abstracts and prints. It makes me very pleased to give to other from things I have made and put smiles on their faces.I never had time as a parent and having a job and a household to manage, so since retirement, you'll find me in the sewing room enjoying myself. happy

I have always loved the freedom that sewing gives me. I hate fighting my clothes to be comfortable and sewing allows me to have not only the clothes I want fit me but in the fabric I like. And in some garments and home furnishings the savings can be dramatic.

One thing I did learn from contract sewing of clothes is to take measurements and weight and if the recipient varies more than 20lbs refitting is at the expense of the customer. And I almost always ordered significantly more fabric than I needed because the need for additional fabric was always directly related to the availability in a crunch.

With the new products what used to be a difficult is now way easier.

BTW I have hundreds of cross stitch patterns.

It took me about 10 years to finish my first quilt, there was 30 crossstich blocks, called Starburst.purple / pink. I made it for my oldest granddaughter. I had helped putting it together. It was beautiful.
