do you listen for the words, or based on the musical aspect?

Personally, I listen to the words...the music is icing on the cake...cake being a good voice.

dreamer music is filled with good poetry, so if I was in it just for the words I'd get Frost on tape or some such thing

with music where there are lyrics (those are words) it is beautiful when the lyrics and the music are both good and sync well together...it's like meeting a new guy where there's a total charge. Deftones, Aldean, Beatles come to mind

I do however like a lot of music where there are no words Winston on piano and Satriani on guitar come readily to mind

I also love some music where the words are pretty silly or not particular esoteric - Def Leppard and Korn come to mind, but me lloves 'em cus the music is good - a well turned riff on a talented lead guitar is always nice, or a fiddle.

to me music is poetry be it in lyric or line (just the music) either or any way it's all good. nice question Dreamer.flowerforyou

Both and neither...I love many genres, but am partial to jazz and blues which include lots of instrumental only tunes and pieces...My dad taught me an appreciation for classical too...Like Sweetest says, the right combination of words and music give that "butterflies in the tummy" feeling each time you listen....and those songs never get old for me...I still listen to Billie Holiday!!

Here is an awesome acoustical guitar solo!

Both for me. Some I listen to because of the lyrics and the music, others I listen to have no lyrics but great music. Some of my favorite bands have very few or no songs at all with lyrics- Camel, Goblin, Tangerine Dream.

lol, thank god you told me what lyrics are....lol

You listed several good ones. I like tons of music, pretty much no rap.
I like to hear all instruments of music, but my favorite is a good voice, and I personally want to learn piano...on my bucket list..lol

In songs with lyrics, I listen to both the words and the music, the voice(s) and the instrument(s). I also enjoy quite a lot of purely instrumental music.

I think both are important. I'm a singer myself and regard the voice as an instrument, but I have a deep appreciation for other instruments as well. (And I'd like to learn to play piano and guitar.)

yes I realize that or at least figured as much...but let me explain anyway. I am also on a site where there are not many whose first language is english. so I have got in the habit of clarifying words sometimes. So the parentheses around lyrics wasn't meant necessarily for you. :)

I was just messing with you a little .... forgive me?

so OK who are the strong lyricists. Bob Dylan wrote all his own poetry, but the delievery is also powerful.

Aaron Lewis, Amy Lee or Zack Delaroche, or Jason Aldean (I like C&W but realize many of u prolly do not so I go light on exampels from C&W but there are TONS of good ones there).

not all of them write their own stuff - so it must be the delivery also. It takes more than a good voice. M&M now there's a lyricist but a lot don't like him cuz he's too damm honest

I listen for the music in most cases, although there are some songs and groups where the vocals just make it worthwhile. Really it all depends on the particular genre of music I am listening to at the time.
