Perhaps what is not making sense, is that bands have different life spans in different regions of the world. What may have been a popular band in your little spot of green, may have been a one-hit-wonder somewhere else and vice-versa.

Several of my favorite bands got almost nothing for airplay here in the U.S., but in Japan (for example) they were really big. Even here in 'murica there will be differences based on geography, like with Rap's East coast/West coast rivalry, let alone what happens on regional commercial radio. It's more a matter of perspective.

If we had our locations posted under our pictures on the forum, it might make a little more sense.

I grew up in the Los Angles area and while the English "new wave" movement did have an impact on music during the 80's it was in now way as popular there as it was in England or in other parts of the states. Most of the bands of that time made their splash and quickly went away. So for me and many thousands of us this was their only hit.

It was the height of the club scene in Hollywood (late 70's early 80's) and we were were much more into hard rock and had a very strong punk scene as well. Hell, there was only radio station in the entire L.A, area that even played groups such as Bow wow wow.

Yeah, you guys are right, it all depends on where we come from.

In the Philippines there were some 80's US/UK-based bands that made it big to us new wave fans (with cult following, so to speak), but I think they never really got enough airplay back at their homeland- i.e. off the top of my head- Fra Lippo Lippi, The Wild Swans, Seona Dancing, Lotus Eaters, Blue Zoo...

Yep Stan that makes perfect sense. I am from South Yorkshire, England and Frankie had three number ones, the Bow wow songs I mentioned all got in the charts and Dexy's had several hits, etc.Sorry for the misunderstanding mate!!

In my neck of the woods (Southern California) they were a local band and had several songs on the radio, like this one:

Good Girls Don't - The Knack

And this was Y&T's only real hit here, and they are also a CA band.

Summertime Girls - Y&T

They have been together for 25+ years, have over a dozen albums (I got them all) and only play little clubs here, but big arenas in Japan and elsewhere.

Donny, not really a misunderstanding, now. Is it? LOL... That's the hidden beauty of threads like this, they allow us to learn about each others culture. Think about it, the UK, the US and OZ, three cultures separated by a common language.

Hi Stan yes I never thought of it that way I guess. You would probably have trouble deciphering my broad Yorkshire accent though, lol.I like all kinds of music though rock is my favourite. I was a big Queen fan growing up, saw them in 1982 at Leeds although I still loved punk when it exploded in 76 and electronic such as Gary Numan, Ultravox etc.Two of my favourite UK bands you might not have heard of are XTC and The Wedding Present.Might be missing for a few days because of work, catch you all soon.
