I think they were played fairly well on Australian radio. I love them.

Australian sensibilities are much closer to British than Americans. Americans never really got them because they were the most quintessentially British band of the era.

Big, yes... However, based on their catalog they should have been right up there with The Who and The Stones. They are not for a variety of reasons.

I like them more than The Stones and about the same as The Who. I haven't liked the Stones all that much since the days of Mick Taylor.

I think the kinks suffered from a combination of problems. Ray Davies was/is an a hole and kind of a weirdo. They didn't have the "cute" or "bad boy" image. They just looked like factory workers. They have an odd name, like and unfinished product. Also they never had great songs.
