North Texas woman badly injured by foul ball at minor league game



A line drive foul ball drastically changed the life of one North Texas school counselor ahead of the back-to-school rush.

Dana Mattay was severely injured by a baseball at a Frisco RoughRiders game on Aug. 14. The line drive left her face badly bruised and swollen.

“She has multiple fractures and her sinuses were crushed,” the family wrote on a GoFundMe page, which it hopes will offset surgery expenses.

Mattay’s family said on the page that Mattay would have reconstructive surgery.

The RoughRiders confirmed to News 8 that the incident happened at the Aug. 14 home game.

“The RoughRiders organization has been in close contact all week with Dana's family, who has kept the club updated on her condition,” a RoughRiders spokesperson said in an email.

The family said the team had expressed “genuine concern” for Mattay in the wake of the incident.

Mattay had just begun a new job as an elementary school counselor, according to the family.

Over $3,600 in donations had poured in on the GoFundMe page by shortly after 9 p.m. Friday night.

This is a terrible injury, that's for sure. I ran our town baseball league (up to 18 year olds) for over 15 years. I saw may share of people ( in the stands too) get him by baseballs. Well hit line drive baseballs. I would follow up with them to give them insurance information or just to see how they were. And I never saw a injury to that effect. Never heard of it from other commissioner's in other towns either.

I'm not saying it can't happen, but I think she would have had to take the hit directly between the eyes. And maybe she did.. but it just looks a little strange to me... JMO

These teams are actually professional organizations, which have to carry a lot of liability insurance. I know we did. When someone, be it a player, a coach, a spectator.. anyone got hurt anywhere on our sports complex our insurance kicked in. If the person had insurance, then both insurance companies worked it out, but I do not ever recall a person paying a dime.

She ended up having several reconstructive surgeries and Darryl paid for all of it bringing her flowers at the ER, recovery rooms, often. This year a minor league bat boy was struck in the head by an on deck batter who didn't see him. Sadly he didn't survive. That's a case where gofundme was put to good use, though a child can't be replaced. This lady is lucky she's not dead, the impact could have easily crushed her skull turning it into organic shrapnel. Regardless the home team's insurance should be taking care of her medical bills.
I've got an idea. Take 250 balls from batting practice and hand them out to the people behind the plate and the dugouts and put up some netting. Dead fans have a tendency to suck the life out of the crowd.
