Five people —
ages 17, 24, 23, 26 and 55 — were shot Tuesday afternoon in West Baltimore, police said.
The group was standing in the 300 block of N. Payson St. near Lockerman Bundy Elementary School in the Penrose neighborhood when a gunman came around the corner on foot and opened fire about 3:40 p.m., police said.
All of the victims were shot in the lower extremities, and none of their injuries are considered life-threatening, police said. One was grazed by a bullet and treated at the scene, another walked into a hospital and the rest were taken to area hospitals. All of the shooting victims are male.
Police said they are "begging" the public for information to help catch the gunman, who they said fled on foot. Detectives have no suspect or knowledge of a motive at this time, but believe at least one of the people in the group was targeted.
"There's a violent offender somewhere right now with a gun that he used to shoot five individuals," police spokesman T.J. Smith said. "We can't stress this enough: Police can't do this alone."
Young students on their way home from school Tuesday walked past a playground cordoned off by police tape, part of the large crime scene. Six evidence markers were placed on the ground at the corner of Penrose and Payson streets at the base of a light pole with a bright blue teddy bear tied to it — an unrelated memorial.
