In my opinion.. yes it is. In my general area (greater NYC area) you would be very safe.

I have carried weapons.. and used them.. when the situation deemed that to be necessary. But in ordinary times and ordinary day by day life, I do not see the reason for it... again my opinion. In my years after not having the need for a weapon, I have never felt the need again to carry a weapon. And I have never found myself in a situation where I wish I had a weapon on me again.. but I do believe in our rights, and a law abiding citizen has the right to bear arms.. Some chose to... some don't

If you count everyone who wrote and signed the Constitution as Liberals, then this would be accurate. However, I think most of those who talk about the brilliance of the American Forefathers would take issue with that characterization, especially since Liberal doesn't mean the same thing it once did.

What's actually true is, that we have a Republic here. It's a different kind of government than some other places have. And since it originated as a confederation of once semi-independent colonies, it includes a lot of separations between authorities.

As for the mess with the rancher and the bull, I think a lot of people are doing the typical routine of jumping to the conclusion that whatever their personal prejudices for and against guns or police or whatever have been proved true by this. Despite the fact that all the pertinent information is not presented yet.

My own GUESS, is that the reason this happened was because the Rancher in question got angry and started shooting at the police, instead of using reason to try to work things out. Generally speaking, opening fire on other armed people tends to have the result that someone is going to get shot.

But we actually don't even know THAT much, from what was posted here. Maybe the Rancher was the hothead. Maybe one of the Deputies was. Maybe the rancher was shot by accident while the others were trying to shoot the bull.

Whatever happened, proves absolutely NOTHING about guns or gun ownership, and NOTHING about politics. These particular people managed to kill one of their own, while supposedly trying to take care of accident victims. That means that SOMEONE was either irresponsible or careless, or idiotic. That's all we know right now.

Oh, and we CERTAINLY haven't been given any evidence that the bull was just a little rambunctious, and that it could have been calmed down and cared for by the rancher.

I was caught in the crossfire of a shootout in SOHO, I was first on scene to an armed hostage taking in Vegas... The only place I felt somewhat safe in the US since is frikken disneyland. Why they choose to carry their weapons in public is part bravado and part "it's my right so I will" IMO. No one is safer with weapons on the street, this is truth. Interesting observation, Canadians are armed too but we don't have the need to carry them out of our homes onto the streets. I'm deadly accurate at 100yrds and I'd use it to protect my home & family.

As a side note, I was close enough to take out both shooters in SOHO NY, let's face it, if I had a weapon, there would have been 3 armed aggressors in the eyes of law enforcement that day... who's who?

In my humble opinion, most gun toting Americans THINK they're safer with guns on the streets but the reality is they're getting way weaker with them in so many other ways

good thing you're up in safe Canadia... wouldn't want to have anyone scare you with their guns...

A few years back a twelve-year-old took down three illegal aliens who broke into his home in Mission, Tx. His mom was assaulted immediately(battered). The three fired first hitting the boy in the arm(.38 cal.). He retrieved his carbine (.22 cal.) and opened fire killing one, injuring another. The police arrived with the ambulances (good for the EMT's protection.) The second injured a$$hole was found hiding under a mobile home approximately three blocks over. If not for diligent detective work he would have died.
By the way, only U.S. citizens are allowed to purchase, own, and possess firearems legally in the U.S. Go figger.
I have never felt safe outside of the U.S.

He killed two innocent, unarmed people less than a mile from my home. I don't carry a weapon but have them ready at home.

This is clearly a tragic story. There must be more to it for it to have escalated to such a point.

I wasn't comparing countries I am interested in this as it's new and wanted to understand.
I was explaining what it's like here so others can understand where I am coming from and why I was asking questions
