KOIN 6 NEWS - Billy Joseph Underwood, 15 and Dyllan Martin, 16, were charged with the kidnapping of Martin's great-grandmother Hazel Abel.
Initially the suspects were not located, but about 9:10 a.m. on Tuesday, a deputy spotted three people matching the suspects' description near the Arco gas station at 2550 N.E. 238th Drive. The suspects, great-grandson 16-year-old Dyllan Martin, 15-year-old Billy Joseph Underwood and a 14-year-old female were taken into police custody. Underwood and Martin are being charged as adults, and pleaded not guilty Wednesday, Nov. 4 to five charges: first- and second-degree kidnapping, second-degree robbery, unauthorized use of a vehicle and recklessly endangering another person.
Multnomah County Court documents show Abel answered a knock at her door about 8 p.m. Nov. 2, when someone threw dirt in her face, covered her eyes, face and mouth, and then pushed her to the ground, taping her hands together and covering her head with a hood.
After being stuffed in the trunk of her car, she said the car drove for hours before stopping. Once the car stopped, she said she untied her hands and pulled the emergency cord to unlock the trunk.
The 14-year-old girl, who's identity has not been released, told police she and the two boys wanted to run away to Portland, and Martin decided to use his great-grandmother's car to get there. The girl told police they stopped in Hood River to make sure Abel was still breathing, and then stopped in Wood Village to buy toiletries.
Martin reportedly told police he stole $60 from Abel the week prior. Court documents also show he and Underwood discussed letting Abel "go three miles into a canyon because she wouldn’t be able to get out,” or knocking her unconscious and leaving her at a truck stop, or killing Abel, putting her body in the trunk of the car and burning it.
A second hearing in scheduled in juvenile court Nov. 12, and an adult hearing at a later date with Multnomah County. The 14-year-old girl will appear in juvenile court Nov. 18.
