CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - Four young men from Glen Burnie have been fined $200 each for killing and grilling a timber rattlesnake in western Maryland.

Online court records show the teenagers pleaded guilty Tuesday in district court in Cumberland to possessing or destroying the snake, a state-protected species.
Each was fined $500 with $300 suspended. All received probation before judgment, meaning their convictions can be expunged after probationary periods ranging from 14 to 28 months.
Maryland Natural Resources Police say the men were camping in the Green Ridge State Forest in August when they killed the snake with a BB gun and grilled it.
The defendants are 18-year-old Austin Golas and Travis Luedtke; and 19-year-old Paul Lafon and Erick Reffitt.
A fifth defendant, 19-year-old Jared Holt, is scheduled for trial (by choice) Dec. 8.

We are technically The South. We are below the Mason Dixon Line.
We are having an increase in last 2-3 years of Southern wildlife do to warmer weather. Insects, reptiles, amphibians. (I forget what else).

We have mountains, farm, sea coast, bay coast..& metro (Baltimore).
All different dialects. Plus the Yanks & people from further south here.

I ate Rattle snake once at Sweetwater, Tx rattlesnake roundup. Taste like chicken jerky. A guy told me that most of the rattlesnakes there came from Mexico.

I remember a few years ago hiking up the side of a mountain in order to take a picture - when all of a sudden a large "fallen branch" about 10 or 12 feet away started moving of it's own accord. That (of course) got my attention, & when I looked over, I saw that it was actually a snake that was about 5 feet long...

I moved a few feet to put a bit more distance between myself & the snake, then took a few pictures. Researching it later, I found that it appeared to be a prairie rattlesnake, at the western edge of it's normal territory. I was really glad that he started moving before I got too close, since I was probably 100 miles or more from a hospital - given the size of that rattler, I would've been a goner for sure...

I dont mind rattlesnakes around here...mainly canebrakes....the timber rattlers Southern cousin... anyways...its the damn cottonmouths that are a pain....mean bastards
