CARSON CITY, NV - Carson City is still coming to grips with the death of Deputy Carl Howell. Howell was a nine-year veteran of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office killed in the line of duty in August. Friday, November 13, 2015, Sheriff Furlong accepted condolences on behalf of Howell from two unexpected sources.
August 20 of this year, it seemed as if all of northern Nevada took time out to stop and pay respects to Deputy Carl Howell. The deputy was killed in the line of duty after trying to break up a domestic violence call in the Capital City.
The highway between Carson City and Reno shut down, with people waving flags and signs to honor the fallen officer.
The Sheriff says the town is still recovering from the incident--it had been 50 years since the last deputy was killed in the line of duty
On the afternoon of November 13 at the sheriff’s office, two unexpected sympathy messages arrived from actors contacted by Carson City resident Don Alexander.
Alexander, a fan of both Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, says the two are known for reaching out to community servants in law enforcement, firefighting and the military
“To get an email saying you have a donation coming, was amazing. And to get an email saying here's a video. It was just outstanding,” says Alexander
The check was officially presented to Sheriff Furlong in the lobby by the Gary Sinise Foundation for $2500.
A DVD with a message from Joe Mantegna to Howell's family and the community was also presented.
“I would just like to express my condolences to the family of Deputy Carl Howell. His wife Rachel, and to his children, Lanae, Jaden, Lillian and Analise,” says Mantegna in the recorded message.
“These are people that we watch on our TVs every night. And they are heroes in our living rooms. And to see them turn around and recognize the losses that we have suffered, and wanting to be a part of our family is just so moving,” says Sheriff Furlong
The sheriff says honoring Deputy Howell is far from over.
In December a portion of I-580 which goes through Carson City will be named after the fallen deputy.

I just had to post this because of the amazing gesture, and the fact I helped make this possible :) I arranged for the video tribute to be made and gave them the details of what happened, information about Deputy Howell and his family and I also reached out to Gary Sinise who was happy to help. You can see the video Joe Mantegna made on the link above as well as me being interviewed.
