Houston's flood of biblical proportions, in photos

Heavy rains, nearing 2 feet in some places, swamped the Houston, Texas metro area, causing significant flooding and forcing evacuations.

By 10:30 a.m. local time on Monday morning, the city of Houston had requested disaster declaration.

As flood waters have covered roadways and more than 1,000 homes have reportedly flooded, authorities have responded to more than 1,200 flooding emergency — and that number is rising along with the flood waters.

The heavy rains caused rivers and creeks to rise, and prevented the low-lying cities drainage system from clearing water fast enough to spare homes from flooding. Reports indicate that the flooding in some spots is comparable, if not worse than, flooding that occurred during Tropical Storm Allison in 2001.

And there's Noah and his smiling family moving their possessions onto the Ark.
Keep this picture for posterity because in 3000 years time there will be people who say this flood of Biblical proportions never happened.

I took my Jeep out and drove around the Southern part of Houston yesterday. The water was starting to creep over Highway 6, but I didn't have any trouble getting around. I wondered as I have many times, why people would build nice homes without building the foundation up above the flood plain. The knowledge, history, and data is there and they save a few thousand dollars to have a home worth over a hundred thousand dollars under water every now and then.

Seems kinda stupid.

Persistent waves of rain and storms will elevate the risk of major flooding in the southern Plains into the middle of the week.
The same system that unleashed feet of snow across Colorado has stalled over the central United States, allowing a continuous stream of moisture to pump into the region.
Rounds of heavy rain, thunderstorms and the greatest risk for flash flooding will focus on portions of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas through at least Wednesday.

While rain will extend along an approximate 1,000-mile swath into the Dakotas, the threat for flash flooding will lessen farther north.
Over a foot of rain will fall over part of the South Central states early this week, especially across southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana.
"One to three month's worth of rainfall [will fall] in a matter of days and hours," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams said.

This rain will only worsen the flooding that has already taken place across parts of southeastern Texas.
Nearly 4 inches of rain fell in one hour at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport early Monday morning. Some locations in the northwestern suburbs of Houston received 7-14 inches of rain in six hours on Sunday night, triggering numerous high water rescues and forcing road closures.
Rivers and small streams quickly rose out of their banks, flooding neighboring roads and lands.
Motorists are urged never to drive through a flooded roadway and instead find an alternate route to avoid a potentially life-threatening situation.
The flooding forced Waller County, Texas, to activate emergency shelters for people displaced by high water.

Any additional rainfall in the coming days will struggle to soak into the saturated ground and will lead to additional flooding problems.
Adding another threat to the region will be a few strong to severe thunderstorms embedded in the flooding downpours.
Localized damaging wind and hail are possible across portions of central, southern and eastern Texas through the middle days of the week.
As this system slowly shifts eastward into the lower Mississippi Valley, rain and storms will become more widely scattered and less intense across Texas during Thursday night.
Drier weather is projected to move in by the end the week.

I don't know how things are there, but I know that up here, developers aren't concerned with floods. Most are business concerns chasing relatively short term profits, so there's no built-in reason for them to warn people that they are building or buying a home in an area where floods are common.

If it's a well known problem as you say, then shame on the local government for granting building permits to people there. Since it's a weight on the entire area's physical plant and support systems, when people are flooded out like this, it should be a no brainer to prohibit building on the flood plains, for the best interests of the larger community.

It's not JUST a risk those who choose to live there.

what i think is odd about these floods here, is that 3 out of the last 4 times this has happened, it's been on a Sunday night/Monday morning... i know this because Monday is trash day here where i live, and i'm always out picking up the trash from the plastic containers the city provides that float down the street...

thank you for your input, but i have lived here since about 2001... seen 4 hurricanes, about 10 floods, and a massive heat wave...

allison was the worst of all the floods here, that i know of...

Sure. I did a simple reverse image search on the pics, because I noticed that the trees in the non-flood picture, were much TALLER than the ones in the flood.

Now. This doesn't mean I don't think things aren't rough down there, I just like to have actual facts being used.
