Have been reading a lot about pets being attacked by cougars along the west coast here and was wondering ....just how far would you go to save your pet from harm or possible death.

For me, I am afraid I would do anything possible to save mine, how about you?

Hey Wolf! Love the posts about pets!
Yes, knowing what I know about cougars, I have a little story. We have a pretty good population of them here in the Franklin Moutains. They're just looking for a quick and easy meal. If they get resistance, they usually split. I was at a water tank last year. It's about 5 miles from the nearest humanity. I went into the fenced area to check the water tank and I heard a low growl. Their camouflage is real good.
She was prowling toward me, real slow. She looked skinny, but that only means she's 6 feet and about 210 pounds. I froze up once I saw her green eyes and her man sized paws. She got 2 more slow paces on me, when my brain did something I was not prepared for. I stopped my foot forward. It made her hit the breaks! We both stood their for a while. I knew if I turned and ran, I'd be Kibbles and bits. The truck was 100 yards away. So I guess the old native dna was calling the shots. I stomped forward two steps and raised my torch flashlight. she backed up and growled. Then I growled and started jogging forward waving the flashlight, I was already picturing the news of the water inspector found in the mountains at the water tank in a remote spot, disassembled by a cougar! She gave way and took one hop and flew over the twelve foot fence!

Man, I almost had a heart attack. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears. I grabbed the fence and screamed at her and she took off running.
Am I saying you should try this? Hell no. Am I bragging, nope, im pretty sure I peed my pants.

If your Dog or Cat are about to be a quick take out meal for a couger, don't panic. They're hungry and they are just as scared of us as we are of them. The rest is your call. Me? I would save my dog!

That was a horrifying experience and glad you came out of it okay. I do not know just how I would have reacted to that situation. I guess you would have to live it yourself to find out. Thanks Rob for sharing.bigsmile
