Then I would assume you'd naturally realize we'd be obsessed with talking about them.

And in order to keep talking about something with someone you have to have a common interest and possibly compatible information.

Which means something that is the same among strangers.

What my "state assembly representative" does or thinks will probably not be as interesting to you as yours is and you probably won't be following them in the news.
Not to mention, there's usually less to talk about as the media doesn't hound them 24/7 trying to play "gotcha! Rise and fall! Splat time!"

But federal politics, Trump, Obama, well they kinda effect everyone the same. The news follows them around and prints lots of juicy little gossip that people can feed their obsessions and hatreds with.

To talk about?
I'll tell you why.
Because people are lonely creatures that simply want to belong to a group.
What's the quickest way to feel like you're part of a group? All snuggled safe and warm being preened by peers?
Common hatred of something else, or immediate fulfillment of common desire. 2+ fighting against 1, or pigs wallowing in slop.

We have a Dem Prez , who thinks he is Pharaoh, but who didn't know who many states their are. And who has set this country back in time & successfully divided it. He is more popular & respected by foreigners than his own people & military.
