I think he did that, at least when, he decided to join the democrat party to run for president (and immediately drop out after losing the nomination) rather than run as an independent or socialist.

candidates run, they say all the reasons they are 'better' than the other candidates and at some point they ultimately then endorse that candidate and instead share all the reasons that candidate is the 'best'

and vice versa,,it wasn't so long ago when Trump praised how qualified Clinton was and what a great president she will be
