President Bush did. Especially if they were going to a place like Rio. It's really not that hard to provide security for all the athletes. Between our Military and Federal Agents it could have been handled.

US swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were removed from their flight from Rio de Janeiro to the United States by Brazilian authorities, US Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky told CNN Sports contributor Christine Brennan. Earlier this week, the two swimmers were with teammates Ryan Lochte and James Feigen, who are wanted for questioning by Brazilian police after questions were raised over their accounts of being robbed.

Judge Keyla Blanc De Cnop said police still need more time to assess whether the US swimmers provided false information and if they filled a false crime report.
The judge said the athletes’ behavior upon arrival at the Olympic Village — combined with the inconsistencies in their statements — led police to question the veracity of their claim.
Judge Blanc De Cnop noted that Lochte had said a single robber approached the athletes and demanded all their money (400 real, or $124).
Feigen’s statement said a number of robbers targeted the athletes but only one was armed, the statement said.
Another potential issue highlighted by judge was the behavior of the athletes on arrival at the Olympic Village in the aftermath.
“It seems the alleged victims found their physical and psychological integrity were unshaken, even fooling about with each other,” said the judge, referring to footage from security cameras in the Olympic Village.
Video emerges
Public speculation has been fueled by the release of a video obtained by the Daily Mail, which it said was filmed shortly after the robbery.
The video appears to show the four swimmers returning to the Olympic Village looking relatively relaxed, and in possession of high-value items that might be expected to have been taken in an armed robbery.
CNN is unable to authenticate the video.
A spokeswoman for the Civil Police told CNN that the case had attracted attention among Brazilians because the victims said their phones and watches hadn’t been taken — items that would be a prized target for thieves in crime-plagued Rio.

Why not? We have thousands of reserves not on post or special operators (who are trained for this very scenario) just sitting on base waiting for orders. The President can transfer any member of the military to what ever Federal Agency he wants at any time. It has been done numerous times over the years transferring Delta operators to the DEA to take out Pablo Escobar, to the CIA to fight terrorists and take out Bin Laden, to the DPS to protect dignitaries and US personnel on foreign soil......

In Salt Lake City, all were protected. The all Federal Agencies were involved as well as the military.

You clearly have zero idea what military training is all about. I've seen people call for the American Military, which is designed to invade and destroy foreign military targets, to suddenly and magically turn into local police forces, for my whole life.

Every single suggestion of such was idiotic on it's face, and usually that was pointed out by those in charge.

Besides, did you even once stop to think whether or not the foreign country (in this case Brazil) in question would be happy that the United States sent in a large contingent of military invaders along with their athletes?

Are you not understanding what I am saying? Re-read what I posted. Units like Delta, SEALS, Rangers are all trained in protection and anti terrorism. It's why Delta even exists.

The President can transfer any active member of the military to any Federal Agency he chooses so they would be going as part of the Diplomatic Protective Service or one of those. It wouldn't be like sending the military in, it would be just a bunch of well trained protection. Its happened many times over the years.

I think some might even be trained for Undercover-Security-Work!
US-Forces have evolved a bit since Flanders in WWI!
