I have been thinking about this lately. Crime rates are skyrocketing, assaults, rapes, kidnappings, pedophilia, rioting, cop killing, terrorist attacks.

What if they created Law Enforcement units, vetted completely who are overseen by not other cops, we all know how that blue wall of silence works, but answer to a committee of say Congressmen or Senator's made up with equal numbers from each political party. Give them blanket immunity to do what they need to do to to go after the worst of the worst.

The statistics don't lie. If a missing child isn't found in 24 hours, they are probably dead. If a murder isn't solved in the first 48 hours it rarely is solved.

The criminals know the laws better then the cops, and they have no reason to talk. If getting a confession or someone to talk helps to save the child's life, solve the murder, prevent a terrorist attack or catch a rapist then it's worth it. This crap of the criminals having more rights then the rest of us is pathetic.

This would send a clear message to criminals that were playing by a new set of rules, ones they cant adapt to and it will reduce crime. You cant adapt to Officer who have immunity to get information from you by any means necessary.

Think about it. What if there was a terrorist attack that we knew was going to happen with in say the next 24 hours. We have someone who knows the details and we can prevent that attack if he talks. He knows the moment he is picked up for questioning to ask for a lawyer and the conversation is over. Take the same guy and you bypass the police station and hang his a$$ off a building, he will talk.

I am not talking the wild west here and just picking people at random, I am saying people who they know are criminals who are tied to the crime or potential crime.

It would work.

First off, the crime rate is NOT "skyrocketing."

After that, your "idea" that torturing known criminals every time a crime does occur, and forcing them to confess to it, would be comic if it weren't so dangerous to the rule of law.

Your "system" HAS been tried, repeatedly elsewhere, and informally in various locales and times in America, and it has ALWAYS resulted in more crimes going unsolved, more corruption of the legal system itself, and the end of personal freedom in the area where it was practiced.

There are lots of ways that many people and cities and nations have tried.
Like:
- Lie about the statistics!
- Change how you measure crime. Gun crime a problem and you want to show legislation improved it? Consolidate! "160 gun crimes in one poor neighborhood last month up from at most 10 every year prior? Well, that just means 1 gun crime area! Look! Gun crime going down!"

Charged with a crime is not guilty of a crime.

All you are advocating is guilty until proven innocent and having no rights until the government gives them back to you after they clear you of any wrong doing.


Then that comes under homeland security and unfortunately thanks to things like the patriot act the guy gets special treatment, disappeared for a while.
Of course when your 9 year old calls in a bomb threat because they don't want to go to school, watch out.
Or when someone randomly calls the SWAT team on you.

You really want to be at the mercy of a system that can pretty much do anything they want if they decide they want to "know" you are a criminal?


Not after day 2 of enacting whatever new law you are imagining and it starts getting abused.
Hows that "we're just interested in terrorist, just the people we know are doing bad," with corporate collusion for mass surveillance working for you, leading to things like Facebook and LinkedIn learning how to mine your address book, call logs, and such?

Increase economic conditions and opportunities for everyone.
That's pretty much the only way that's going to be successful.

the problem is in a country where people are 'innocent' until 'proven' guilty ,, the precognitive idea of KNOWING someones guilt conflicts with their rights,,,,, I would not be willing to give that up

about the only verifiably consistent proof is dna and that even only proves there is some connection and not who committed a crime,,,,,eye witnesses can be wrong and people can be coerced into making confessions,,,,,,I wouldnt trust someones 'knowing' guilt before it is ever proven as justification to have no boundaries in how we treat others,,


at least you are thinking about it,, but I think the common denominator amongst those 'proven' criminals across jails is that they are most often undereducated and impoverished


attacking those two areas : Improving education and decreasing poverty, would go a long way to decreasing crime,, people who have more have more to lose,, people who have less do not and may therefore be more desperate and willing to turn to crime

another driver of crime besides poverty is the feeling of not belonging of not being one of us.
The solution offered in this thread would only reinforce the incentive to commit more crime

. I'm not so sure that's going to change much. Have you seen the NBA or NFL?. They get money and power and are still getting in trouble. Rich people do drugs, they just get them from their doctor. Still illegal,but a gray area. Most crimes don't affect most people besides paying a little more in taxes for the court system and jailing. We give people jobs and they don't show up. We give them housing and they trash it. We give them money for food and they buy junk food. Many crimes are domestic related, drug or alcohol related, or there's all the corporate crimes that go on. So we would need different rules for each type of crimes, but as we all know just throwing money at a problem isn't going to solve it.

Actually, shooting deaths are at an all time high, deaths on law enforcement are at a record high and we have had more attacks on US soil then anytime in history.

I am not saying take every criminal out and give them a pavement facial, I am talking using methods that would otherwise be not so legal to catch the worst of the worst.

People who commit those types of crime show no respect for the rule of law and sometimes you need to fight fire with fire.

but there are ways to coerce confession without ever laying a finger, by lying about evidence, or witnesses or alternate consequences and feeding the 'suspect' details and only requiring them to repeat what you have said as the 'confession'
