why target the Mexican border?
Most illegals in the U.S. have come through Mexico.
That's where there are established routes.
Other than that:
- Cartels, drugs, violence, rampant corruption.
- Rape trees.
- Body's littering the desert.
- La Bestia.
- South America.
- "Coyotes."
If you build a wall there then you need a wall around Canada too, if its really about securing our neighboring borders
That's like saying "You have to brick up your front door if you plan on building a 4th wall on your house."
Other than that you have to look at the difference between how Canada approaches people coming in.
Canada has a system and infrastructure closer to the U.S. in vetting people coming into the country than Mexico does.
Canadian government - "Who's coming into this country? Who are you, can you prove it? We'll check."
Mexican government - "I don't care who you are. You coming to Mexico? Are you rich? No? GTFO!...Oh, you're just passing through to sneak into the U.S.? Ok. There's a rehoming fee. Here's a how to brochure on getting into the U.S. and avoiding capture."
As soon as Canada starts having violent drug cartels, begins sending waves of drug mules over, becomes one of the kidnapping capitals of the world, feels it necessary to send out their fully armed military to patrol tourist areas, neighbors another continent full of people trying to come to this country illegally and facilitates their travel, prints up "how to" pamphlets for sneaking in and avoiding capture, allows lucrative people smuggling businesses, or Canadians begin attending violent rallies waving the Canadian flag demanding representation and change without acculturation, then I'll start demanding a wall for the Canadian border.
he wants Mexico to fund it
This is little different than saying the U.S. is funding China's military buildup.
They bought a bunch of U.S. debt. Our service on that debt (the interest we pay) at one point was about as much as they were spending on their military.
It's not like the U.S. can start "wall taxing" the Mexican people.
But the U.S. can charge tariffs, fines, and fees on other things, the increase in funds, through the magic of accounting, could equal the cost of wall expansion.
do you feel about this controversial topic.
That it's only really controversial because it's Trump.
There are already walls on the border with Mexico.
Expanding the walls and security measures on the Mexican border are already part of current immigration laws, passed by previous administrations.
The government just didn't do anything before now, dragged its feet, didn't appropriate money for it.
"Building the wall" is actually "enforcing current laws."
What are you going do wall the whole country.
You do understand that it's not building a wall for isolationism...right?
So much as a desire to control immigration?
So people do it the legal way?
You know, use the system and laws in place? Rather than circumvent them?
As Clinton and Obama have said; we are a nation of immigrants, but also a nation of laws.
Do you think that wall really going to keep illegals from getting into this country?
Depends on what else they use.
Part of the laws passed for "strengthening the border" are motion sensors, cameras, drones, infra red, more border agents, seismic reading equipment or whatever to discover tunnels/tunneling, things like that.
It's not just a big solid doorless cement wall with Don Knotts at the top holding a rifle and binoculars.
Okay lets just say this works then we have to look at the shorelines of Florida. The Cubans & the Haitians floating on tires in the middle of the Atlantic ocean coming here.
Coast guard.
Not to mention Obama ended the wet feet, dry feet policy.
The ocean itself acts as a wall, so only the most desperate even try.
If Cuba contiguously bordered the U.S., do you believe there would be very many people in Cuba anymore?
what about the Canadian border?
The Canadian border relies on technology more than the Mexican border already.
Canada has a pretty effective vetting process for who enters their country internationally.
There aren't 1,000's of random South Americans riding on top of a train through Canada.
I mean they did build a wall to divide east & west Germany, and you see that didn't work we torn down that divided wall
They tore it down because it was too effective.
If it wasn't effective...they wouldn't have had to tear it down. It just wouldn't have mattered.
