illegal: not allowed by law
I'm not sure there was a written law one way or the other when the settlers came to the USA until they occupied and created some
but I do know that the ones in charge determine the law, usually based loosely in their own culture and values
I believe people often interchange legality with morality, which I consider a mistake
for instance: it was once illegal to make, sell, or distribute alcohol, and that 'crime' naturally lead to more who could be deemed 'criminal',,,, but as time went on, that changed
I think it is a matter of the disparity that can exist between 'the letter of the law',, and 'the spirit of the law'
sometimes we just seek to punish,, and other times to be just
but to many, ALL that matters is the law and whether it is followed to the letter,,,,,I always felt details matter when considering the 'spirit' of the law,,,,,or at least they should,,,,
