Legendary actor Kirk Douglas has been candid about his extramarital affairs in the past, and his wife of more than 60 years says she accepted his infidelity - and willfully turned a blind eye to his lovers.

“Kirk never tried to hide his dalliances from me,” Anne Douglas, 98, writes in Kirk and Anne: Letters of Love, Laughter and a Lifetime in Hollywood, a new book out Tuesday that reveals intimate letters between the longtime couple. “As a European, I understood it was unrealistic to expect total fidelity in a marriage.”

What do you think? Will expectations of fidelity go out the window with expectations of gender/sexual roles? Have the most recent generations or will the present and future generations have a culture where sex is unavoidable and necessary and fidelity(like marriage) obsolete?

It would be yet another cultural change that could justify having 'civil unions' instead.

Some will always demand total fealty and, children aside,
the whole point of the marriage union is to bind together.

In other words, Anne Douglas doesn't share the marital values of the Christian faith.

Loss of expectations of fidelity is not the same as increase in expectations of infidelity.


Hopefully people will realize marriage is for the sake of children rather than satisfaction of ego and identity.

I think "fidelity(like marriage)" will be obsolete as long as people keep spouting/believing things like "you're young, you have your whole life in front of you, focus on school, and a career, go out, have fun, enjoy life, you shouldn't be thinking about a serious relationship right now, you have plenty of time for that later."

why place judgment on those... not saying u ... I am sure their are many who have this kind of marriage ... and has been said... what ever works ... now deceiving your mate is another topic ...

I kinda agree with you ... that's what I always said to my daughter... but that is not what happened ... they fell in love and had a child ... at first my thinking was yea to young ... more the more I thought about it ... I thought is was great ... becouse I had a very hard time having a child ... even thought I could not have one for a while to many female problems ... so in my thinking I am very happy to have a grandchild and my daughter did not have to go through what I did in my young yrs an adult hood ... being what I have an had can be hereditary ... don't wish that kind of pain on her ...

I also think with all these reality programmes and actors being in the public eye some people think this is how life is lead where as in reality it's far from it, as a would expect, from many of you is if he or she did to you they'd of been down the road straight away!
