Good Day my lovely people of Mingle2, wow, my last forum was a mega hit according to you guys, I love the feedback, I learned a lot for my voicers. The rain is gone & the sun is out, I'm feeling good today. Now, My loyal " Vocal Avengers" you not going to believe this I came across. So I jumped at my work computer, you know checking email,watching stream TV, I went to CNN.com to find some juicy topic for my political studies class and I came across this article. An Indian-American disguised himself as a black Man to get into college & got in! No Lie. The article goes on to say the guy name is Vijay Jojo, & he claims he got into medical school by pretending to be a black man now thinks President Trump will end affirmative action like Lincoln ended slavery. Because of his brown skin , he shaved his head low cut threw on a suit & tie and posed to be an African American to get into Medical school, and guess what he got in. America, how do you feel about what Vijay doing. Is it proving a point about race relations? Is he exploiting Blacks for his own gain? Or is he just showing the heart of affirmative action? Do you believe in Affirmative action? YO, we have to get into this one? let's talk about this, can't wait!

Wow, okay to answered my own question, I think he wants to prove a point. I don't think he meant to play the role of being black to make fun or exploit us but to show that if you a minority in this country, well.....you may be able to go to school next to nothing. I just hope he takes what he observed and educate other & not to cut corners to ease his way to the top.

Can you provide a link to the news story? I think that would help.

Without reading the actual story, I admit I feel some outrage over his actions. After all, if he were simply trying to prove a point, shouldn't he refuse admission after confessing what he did? If he's so altruistic, should he not ensure that he does not personally profit from his demonstration? If he accepts or accepted the admission and matriculated, then he is undermining his own moral ground, I would think.

Things like this always get my interest. I managed to find the story, and took a brief read of it. Seems it became a bit of a social experiment for this person. But, he is not the first person to do something like this. Think back to Rachel Dolezal, the woman who claimed to be black. Of course there is Craig Cobb who was working to turn a North Dakota town to white only, found to have 14% sub Saharan African. With a few key words on the browser of your choice, I am sure you can find many more examples.
I am sure affirmative action has help many people get a start in education, employment, etc. But, it cannot be a stand alone program. Needing a program like this is a symptom of things that are wrong and what needs to be fixed. People should be accepted for who they are, their abilities, etc. Programs like this will always have people trying to take advantage. I just hope this fellow pays it back, money wise, or maybe help the poor. But show he appreciates what he got and how he got it.

Humm so are you saying he deceived others with the color of his skin to take advantage of what is offered to Black Students??

What point did he prove?

That he can deceive others with his color?

That Blacks have a opportunity to go to College if they try?
Which color has no bearing on if you can go to College or not...

Anyone can apply for a Pell Grant from the Government for College tuition. With the Pell Grant you do not have to pay that back either... But you have to be low income in order to get it.. So any one that wants to go to College can apply for it if they meet the requirements.. I used it when my kids was growing up paid for all of my college classes and enough to pay for my books.. And did not have to pay a dime back either..

So the only thing he proved is that he most likely cheated the system in order to get the grants... I just hope he actually finished his degree and does something to help others..

But he did prove that Color makes no difference when applying for College. Hummm or did he prove that being Black got him into college?

there really isnt enough information.

did he walk in and they say 'oh , you are black, you are accepted'...lol

or did he provide credentials and other background just as likely to affect his acceptance?


and what good is it to be accepted if you really aren't qualifed to the position,, which will eventually, and often quickly be discovered at the cost of your dismissal,,



I feel affirmative action is a great thing when used as intended, to include formerly excluded participants in having a fair opportunity. Beyond that , I feel it is rare an employer or school will accept someone ONLY Because of their race,, 'qualified' and 'merit' are two very broad concepts which include any number of factors.

sounds like he had to. Sounds like he qualified. Why is race a consideration and not merit?

what are 'references'? but a way of crediting one's experiences

previously oppressed or excluded groups often can receive a 'handicap'(Golf term) for the unique obstacles they may have had in their particular demographic that held them from equal opportunities,,

many things that dont seem like 'merit' are considered, the 'who you know' doctrine fits into one of those things,, if you can have an FBI agent fend for you,, its definitely a leg up,, if you grew up in an impoverished ghetto, you probably have noone to fend for you for that same leg up,, so it just levels the odds in areas people don't have control over,,,

Ultimately, he told CNN he applied at 22 medical schools and interviewed at 11. He was wait-listed at four schools and got into only one.

that is to say, more precisely

college education is becoming as much of a requirement to compete as high school once was, yet there is a history of many people from impoverished, or underserved demographics, not having access to the same type of elementary or high school education, the same type of references, the same types of experiences that others have had

Affirmative action takes the reality of the existing INEQUALITY so that people from all walks can get a fair shake at the opportunity,,,,

children are born into UNEQUAL circumstances through no fault of their own, and not until they are of legal age of consent can they do much about it, we do not choose to leave those stuck in those unequal circumstances for a lifetime, so when they show 'merit' and drive and ambition in their character(Which they do have something to do with) we give them the opportunity once reserved only for a select few who were born into environments with better opportunity and experience,,,

sure you learn from the past but as you grow you graduate to the field of equality.

if I may in the scriptures it says if your servant wishes to follow the laws of the people to take on the way of life of the land then that servant becomes as one born of the land. Equal. So anyone coming into the land who want to assiminate then is as one born of the land. The land of the free, equal to all, justice for all. If we say we are not equal and believe we are not equal we will never be equal and always a servant to those who will use us for thier own benefit and not the benefit of the land that All Are Created Equal. We must move to see a future. Just like we look for a better future for our children than we had. Most parents I know work hard to give thier children this future not the history they had.

Even if he applied to all those Colleges and only one would accept him, it seems now that he is basing that due to he was black the other Colleges would not accept him.

He even says his College grades was not that great. If your applying for any type of grant or scholarship I assure you they consider your grades. They tend to give the grants to those that are willing to apply themselves..Then if you go to the community College it don't matter what color you are as long as you can pay for your classes... And they will accept you regardless of your low grades.

I bet the results would be different if he went to the same Colleges as a black man with 4.0 GPA... How much you want to bet that many of the ones that turned him down could have been due to his low grade average and not the color of his skin...whoa

I do not think I can get you to understand.

the past impacts the present, just as the present impacts the future.

Past oppression impacted the power and wealth and experience of different demographics differently. Those differences and their effects continue on.

We do keep our past, we hang on to the idealism of 'founding fathers', we hold on to customs and holidays,, there is no simple way to just pretend the past never happened, because the effects continue to be felt and those effects continue to need to be addressed.

Just as our past molds who we are as individuals, a country's past molds who we are as demographics of people. It is not about whether we 'want' it, but about the reality of what it is.
