Have you thought about setting out a menu for the week Tom.

Might help if you plan what you’re having, easier said than done mind you.

I have a menu planner on my Thunderbird Calendar.
I should probably update it with foods I eat now.
Thanx for the reminder.

I figure it takes about the same time to cook for 4 as for 1, so that's what I often do. I freeze the other 3 meals separately. I can throw one in the fridge the day before I want it again the following week. It's like homemade tv dinners without all the preservatives.

I love doing this with chicken breast. Grill a few at once, then chop them up into individual servings for the fridge and freezer for easy use in chicken caesar salads, sandwich wraps, burritos, chicken and rice soups, chicken and broccoli casseroles, or chicken, spinach and tomato omelettes.

Now I'm hungry. tongue2

I've done something similar in the past.
Lately it stopped working for me because I forget I have it in the freezer and by the time I get a hankering for it again, a half a year has gone by. Then it gets "that taste" and I throw it out anyway.

I've done that with a couple of things. laugh

I often make large pots of soup for myself, especially in winter. I don't like the canned stuff. After it's cooked and cooled, I portion it into single serving containers and freeze. Always use labels and dates. Bacon and ham freeze well. I rarely buy bacon but separated 2 pieces in well wrapped plastic and it works good. Same with bread. You may have to wrap in foil as well. I remember years ago, they used to sell half loaves of some brands of bread.

Yes. I love it. :)

I need to tell you a funny story about making keffir and multiplying the culture. First time I made keffir I was covering the recipient and bam next thing you my kitchen was all messy. But yes I prefer keffir over yogurt. I love to cook, too.

I went to the store for an apple, small salad bowl, toaster waffles, and a yogurt.
The checkout girl smiled and said, "You must be single." I coyly asked, "How did you guess?"

She said, "Cause YOU'RE F*&^EN UGLY!"

Tom one of the main things that helps is when we go buy grocery's we tend to over buy what we can really eat...

What I have done is started cutting the amount of fresh stuff I buy... Buy only what you can eat in a weeks time so those things stay fresh... So pretty much cut in half my fresh stuff and have very little waste now...

Meats always separate into single potions that can be ate within one meal if possible...

If it is frozen stuff go for the items you can open and take out single servings... less waste...

Even biscuits I buy the frozen so that way I can use one at a time.... and no waste...

When I buy hamburger meat instead of cooking it all for one thing... I start off using some for hamburgers then use part of it and cook it with taco seasoning... or use it to make a small meatloaf.... Planing on start cutting the hamburger meat roll in half so I don't have to thaw it all out..

As far as meats tho I do not thaw out the day before when I did that I seemed to waste more cause by the next day I wanted something else instead..

So when I decide to cook I take out what meat I will need and put it in warm water to thaw out. By the time I get all the stuff together the meat is thawed out...

My issue doesn't seem to be with fresh produce I can buy individually.
For example, I buy about 3 Roma tomatoes at a time.
I cut one up to eat with sea salt, use one for a personal pizza and one for sammiches. They are small and seem to keep well.
My issue is with lettuce, cabbage, watermelon (any melon).
Next time I buy lettuce I'm gunna try destemming and bagging with paper towels.

I usually buy meat and separate it into singles. Thing is, by the time I get to the last portion, it is 3 months old and has a gamey taste. I buy the 1 lb rolls of 80/20 ground beef. I'm lazy. When I plan a meal involving ground beef I plan two meals back to back.
If I am making Beef a Roni or a mix that calls for a lb I make it and just eat the leftovers for lunch or dinner the next day.

Right now, I have the smallest corned beef brisket I could find thawing for tonight's dinner. Luckily, I found a fist sized head of cabbage. I bought one large baking potato and 3 carrots.
Chances are I won't be able to eat even half of this meal.
It will taste wonderful but it will be a large leftover in the fridge. I have to go buy bread to have a corned beef sammich.

As it sets, my supper tonight, being the smallest portions possible is still geared for two people.
What I really need is not smaller portions but another mouth to feed, preferably female, locally.

so advertise that locally tom...

home cooked meals served promptly at 6 daily.

blondey had the idea for the veggies. dad found a loose leaf lettuce he potted and would just snip a few leaves off as needed you could prolly find a cabbage variety too.
even the melons. if you were growing then it wouldn't amount to the same waste wise. no spent money in the trash just time

I'm not really concerned with the money wasted, its the food wasted that gets me.
I have done without, wasting large amounts of food is just wrong but if I am going to throw it out because its bad, I'm not giving it to someone else to get sick.
In this instance, I am seeking prevention.

The advertisements are up.
I even have one here.

Well using a big plastic container for the lettuce as well as any fresh veggies with the paper towels works amazing.. Doing that way I can keep a head of lettuce for 2 weeks... Just change out the paper towels once they are soaked..

Well and learn to cook for one instead of two.. It is hard but can be done....

Like the cornbeef brisket I would have cut it in half still or even 1/3rds...

When I buy meats if you are having them ruin in the freezer even, then cut in half what you buy or just one package and then separate them.

Most of my meals I cook there is no left overs. Except for can veggies and well it is just as cheap to buy the regular cans then it is the smaller ones.. Or get the frozen where you can limit what you use...

Yeah, I do single portion my meats like chicken breasts, thighs and drums, Boneless pork ribs, beef short ribs, even steaks.
Right now in my daily freezer I have a cornish hen, two separate ham steaks, 1/2 a slab of bacon, 3 individual boneless pork ribs, a steak, a lb of ground beef, six breaded fish fillet from a bag of 10, around 15 coconut butterfly shrimp from a box of 24, frozen corn, pictsweet frozen baby brussel sprouts single serving, 3 Zatarains meals, one hungryman meal, an unopened small bag of meatballs and chocolate ice cream, pint.

In the deep freeze I have the reminder of the steaks 5 left, the rest of the boneless ribs, 7 left, stouffers lasagna singles x 2, jalepeno chedder poppers unopened box, french toast minis unopened box, 4 more zatarains meals, 1 more hungry man meal, 3 kahaki bowl & roll meals, klondike bars, italian ices, 5 huge bags of frozen fruits and vegs, frozen bread dough bag of 3 unopened, assorted burritos and chimichungas, a bag of mixed berries for slushies and a few ither things in the bottom , one of which is a rabbit that has been there for years.

I wrap my meats in freezer wrap then bag them and lable them with marker.
My deep freeze opens at max 1x a week. Sometimes longer.
But I don't just eat freezer foods, sometimes all I can eat is some soup. I have plenty of canned goods.
Did you know that noodles can go bad too?
I didn't but I do now. Try hacking down two year old ramen. LOL
