Respect the living and dont overtly disrespect the dead. Absence to a funeral, to me, is not disrespectful. Funerals are another symbolic gesture like saluting a flag. Great if you CHOOSE to participate, not terrible, (to me) if you opt out.

Sitting Presidents traditionally send their wives to the funerals of former First Ladies. Melania Trump attended Barbara Bush's funeral.

oh, so we are talking disrespect of a symbolic tradition, more than we are saying simply not attending is the same as disrespecting. Okay. I can get with that. Not quite the same, imho, as disrespecting the dead though. That would be showing up, speaking ill of them, or doing some other overt or foul action.

President Bush ( Jr) told a story of when he was at his Mom and Dad's house visiting while he ( Jr.) was President. Jr & Sr. were watching a baseball game on T.V and Mom came in and told Jr. to take his feet off the coffee table. Jr. said " What!.. I'm the President of the United States?, Mom said.. I don't care who you, are take your feet off the table!

I wasnt gonna say it, but I thought the same about the description of 'tragedy', being the average life span for american women is around 80.

It's not meant to be disrespectful. There is a tradition that sitting Presidents do not attend the funerals of former First Ladies.

Many First Ladies lived into their 90s, so the average age for them is 90. It is always sad to see someone pass away, even if they have advanced to a great age or an age that is beyond the average.

I totally agree. I just felt the word 'tragedy' (an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe) was something a bit different than mere 'sad'.

I really could care less who was at the funeral. All that stuck in my mind was her and her husband. That photo said it all. 2 swans

Admiration is the word. Her husband and her son were both the most powerful men in the world at different times., but it was her that ruled that family. She kept her men, her children and her grandkids.. grounded. When those grandkids did something wrong.. she called them on it.. as a good Grandmother should. ( their own words)


She was the glue in that family and America was lucky to have her.
