Hi rosie, I think The Beatles would be a great idea. My favorite singer would not show up here. I know that.

Bonzos doo dag dog band
I love Dada, it can be beautiful, but never disappears up its own bum as its self aware and thrives on surreality and making nonsense of things that are nonsense but pretend to be otherwise. Thus making sense of nonsense and making you smile

It is not a easy answer.. or maybe not even a fair one.. todays artists have the luxury of videos whereas prior ones did not.

Michael Jackson was a great artist, but how great would he have been in peoples minds had they not been able to watch his video's, which magnified him and his music.

Same for the others from the " video and up" generation. I don't know that it is a level playing field.

There are those that have sold the most albums and huge concerts tours. I don't care about that. My favorite artist happens to be Neil Young. people will find him unappealing. He's been recording music for more than 50 years. He must have something going on.

Rory Gallagher! Yeah I know you've never heard of him but he's a household name in the UK and Europe.
He's the guy that when Jimi Hendrix was asked "how does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world"? Jimi said, "I don't know, go ask
Rory Gallagher"!
He died young in '98 from infection following a liver transplant, hardly toured here because he HATED flying.
This is a guy who in his early 20's passed after being asked to join the Rolling Stones, how many would do that?
By all I've ever read (a lot) he was a true gentleman and without exception was said to be a really sweet guy.
Just an Irish boy who was happy to lead his power trio and play very often.
Recently the airport in his hometown of Cork Ireland was renamed Rory Gallagher International Airport. There's a lifesize bronze statue of him in Cork and every year they have the RORY FEST, it lasts several days and features many bands playing his music.
I recently retired from the pro music world (sorry not a rock star) and if you really want to see an artist who stayed true to himself check him out!

That EVER lived?
The caveman that beat the first pattern.
From that uneducated moment on, all music came to be.

Perhaps he was swinging his club and hit a hollow log.
He liked the loud sound it made so he hit it again and it made another sound. So he started hitting it over and over and as he hit it he noticed that where he hit it changed how the sound sounded. So he started hitting it at different spots and was able to make the sounds in a pattern.
Other cavemen heard the sounds and imitated on their own hollow logs and pretty soon there was music in the world.

The best music is from raw creativity and you can't get any more raw than that.

Leonardo DaVinci!

Oh sorry we're talking "musical" artists. :grinning:

Okay so James Brown and Marvin Gaye for the moves and the sounds that tbey introduced to the music world and are still being mimicked today, and Selena and Lena Horne for having the courage and the pipes to open the doors.

You get 1 demerit for Leonardo but I will take it away and give you a plus since you mentioned Marvin Gaye. No one could touch James Brown for his moves and no one could touch Marvin Gaye for his sensual get in the mood music.

Mike Patton. I mean c'mon, there isn't a musician that could hold a candle to the man. Mr.Bungle is one of my alltime faces, the album "California" .especially the tracks Retrovertigo, and Air conditioned nightmare. Hes got a wide range as as well. I can't think of one project of his that I don't like. Mans a genius!
