Hey, if this survey is true, it IS great news.

I am continuing to look at it with cautious optimism though. Worried that the survey cites a lot of barber shops, and not a more diverse base of businesses.

Last week I drove through one of the more ethnic cities in my area, and saw a whole two-block stretch of their main street with side-by-side barber shops and beauty parlors, on each side of the street, with the infrequent pre-paid phone store in the middle. I commented to myself then that it seems that the area would need a TON of customers to keep that many barber chairs full.

Barber shops are big cash businesses, which are also good for money laundering of dope sales (also a big cash business)

Pre-paid phones are also another favorite of the dope industry.

The companies both posted general articles about the results of that survey on their websites in January without making any distinctions about race or ethnicity except that 47 percent of "aspiring entrepreneurs" surveyed were minorities.

The 400 percent increase in black-owned businesses claim, however, was not made until a subsequent graphic was published on Guidant’s website on Aug. 8.

I see my share of new barber shops and businesses like that as well, but I have also recently seen a upswing in black owned construction type businesses here in my area. Especially sheetrocking,framing and Demo. companies. My mechanical contractor is a black business owner.. sharp as a whip and his crews ( mostly black) do good work. There is a lot going up in the greater NYC area, a lot of construction. and a lot of opportunities which it appears some are taking advantage of.

That is good to hear then.

I just can't see the survivability of a street foll of barbers. I mean, I tip generously, but no one is feeding a family on just my tips. And my hair is on a once-a-month cut schedule, so...

I have a friend who is a barber. He easily makes $50 an hour. Still has enough time during that hour to eat lunch. It's mostly cash also. Down side is Saturday is the busiest day.

in this case, it was a specific survey of one firms clients (who we could expect to have higher business ownership) and there was no actual source of comparison given to know what numbers were being compared to come up with the percent of increase, or from what source.


it could very well be that within their business they saw an increase in minority CLIENTS who were owners, or it could be they were comparing some other source of ownership (that used different standard of ownership) and comparing it to their clients ... its just difficult to know with the slight information provided.


I give them credit for realizing how it was being falsely cited and taking it back down.
