Last year was the first time I had to put a pet to sleep ~ my cat with a spinal cord injury.

Have you stayed with your pet during the process?

I'm glad I stayed with my Moby.

Here is a Twitter post

Asked my vet what the hardest part was about his job &he said when he has to put an animal down 90% of owners don't actually want to be in the room when he injects them so the animal's last moments are usually them frantically looking around for their owners &tbh that broke me

It is the saddest experience ., I was with Stanley when he was euthanised for age related multi organ failure and I held him and cuddled him the whole time . In many cases it is a really peaceful process .. like falling into a deep sedation . It is the emotional side that I think many have difficulty with . . But it is ok to cry and grieve . He had a wonderful life and there was no way I would ever left him suffer  .

Some cannot afford the cost of treatment and the decision to put their pet down is a financial
One . I am sure it is a difficult situation to face for many . No matter the reason ., it is still a loss.. which everyone deals with in their own way .

Sorry you had to go through that it is a very hard thing to go through.... Have lost a few all of a sudden... it is never easy loosing our Fur Buddies...

Myself I have never had to put one of mine to sleep so far..but have lost several over the years..

A dear friend of mine had to put his boxer Sadie to sleep.. It was due to she had cancer and lived like 2 years longer then the Vet had expected.. He had her for at least 11 years or so..

Talking about a experience it was one for sure. It is one I will never forget.. He called me and several others telling us he was going to have to put Sadie to sleep her cancer had progressed pretty far and there was nothing they could do.. She had developed big sores on her back and the Vet told him she had to be in lots of pain..

So he set up the date to have it done... Called me and several others for support he had raised her as a pup she was one of the most amazing dogs I have ever been around even kept her for 3 weeks one time when he was out of town and could not take her. For she went everywhere with him to work and all he ran a backhoe..

Well the day of the appointment I went to his mom's house and as soon as I walked in Sadie met me at the door.. When I sat down and leaned towards her, she did something she had never done.. She came over to me looked at me and gave me a big ole lick right up the side of my face.. it was as if she knew..

When we got to the Vets he agreed and thought it was best that he gave her the shot outside with all of us around for they had already dug a place to bury her at his mom's house... And Brad was going to take her home with him,,

We went outside and they put her in the back of the truck so we all could stand around the bed of the truck.. What she did brought tears to my eyes.. We were all standing around the bed of the truck talking..She got up walked around to each person nosed them got her last pet from them and went to the next person.. then she walked to Brad he was standing by the tailgate.. With the Vet... the Vet sat down on the tailgate and Sadie walked right up to him as if to say I'm ready..

As soon as he gave her the shot Brad was holding her in his arms and we were all standing beside him with our hands on Sadie it was a moment in my life I will never forget for she looked at us all as if to say good-bye then laid her head down on Brad and passed away peacefully..

It was a while before we left for it totally tore Brad up.. she was his world!! I promise you everyone had tears in their eyes even the Vet.. due to her actions prior..

She crossed the Rainbow Bridge that day~~~~

Yeah, and I'm watching mine die slowly and eventually will have to put him down so he doesn't suffer.

I've had to have three dogs put down. It never gets any easier. But it's part of the contract you make with them when you first bring them into your life.

I worked for a Vet 25 yrs ago. I was happy to assist, as I knew I could offer the comfort they needed to pass on peacefully. If an owner does not want to be there, it is best. They can feel our emotions, and that is an unfair one to have at that time. My friend and my sister both stayed with their cats when they put them down, loving them until the end. Glad that you did too.

I was not with my Grandad in his final moments. I sat by him for three days. I left. I don’t know why I felt like leaving, but evidently that was when he died, and the sun was setting outside the window. I was sad I was not there, but he had others around him.

I know that is slightly off topic; there was no euthanasia or pets.

sorry for your loss ... 1 of the hardest things to do ... if it makes you feel better ... :>) my long time cat die yrs ago old age ... but by the time my x got home cause he loved him to... he died well i was not satisfied I said we are taking him to the vet ... my x now thought i was crazy he new blue had gone but with my action and freaking out we took the cat to the vet and they said he was gone ... but we both where with him ... in those last moments ... which is good ... only one time I was fostering a gentle giant dog ... that was very old ... I saw him when I got back home up at my neighbors...looking down at me i said I would be right up ... and what a sad look I will never forget as he passed ... that was really hard and hard even to think about it today ... just lost another foster dog but they call and told me ...she had it good in her last days here at my house ... and got to kiss her good bye... I keep saying no more but know I have the brother of a cats neighbor ... I started feeding him ... still not sure what I will do as the weather starts to freeze ... I tend to bring them in ... but he just may be a inside during the night and out side for the day... an all I know is when you love your animals they are like family and it hurts to say good bye to them when it is their time ... :>(
