(Reuters) - The man gunned down by police who mistook him for the suspect in an Alabama shopping mall shooting on Thanksgiving night died after being struck by three bullets, all fired from behind him, a lawyer for his family said on Monday.

The official autopsy of Emantic "EJ" Bradford, 21, has yet to be released, but an independent review from a pathologist commissioned by his family indicates Bradford had his back to police when he was shot, civil rights attorney Ben Crump told reporters.

"It clearly demonstrates that EJ posed no threat to the off-duty Hoover Police Department officer who killed him while working a private security detail at Riverchase Galleria mall, since EJ was moving away from him," Crump said.

He said the evidence corroborated accounts of multiple witnesses who said Bradford "was trying to help others."

I posed this exact scenario on many occasions. when someone becomes aware of shooting , and then they see someone else with a gun, how do they know THAT person is the threat or the protection?

its a bad idea.

It's a tradegy when innocent people is killed.

I've been in Israel a few times. Especially in Jerusalem you will see a lot of police and soldiers with assault weapons, not only a pistol. But I feel very secure there. And those times when terror(attempts) occures they manage to neutralize the terrorist almost imediatly.

In Norway the police has until recently never been armed. They had guns locked down in the police car, though. But had to call a judge before they could unlock it. It's easy to argue that it has reduced "cop killings" by almost non existent.

Does that comfirm that less guns is safer? Maybe. Maybe not.
As mentioned above, just untill recently the Norwegian police was unarmed. But that changed july 22. 2011. Many argue that several kids wuld have been saved if the police was armed that day.

I don't know, but I feel safer when the good guys are armed. The bad guys will always be armed anyway.

wonders if the cops feared for there lives , by the dudes back : (

problem is not the guns , its the people that are using the guns
now with more people having guns , i can see where that will help as most people go after target's that are for the most part helpless

but it would really help if the people in charge would stop there shoot first and ask later , cause ya cant ask the person anything when they are dead

when i went to school we had gun racks in the back of are trucks with guns in them , could leave them there all day in school , then go out and play with the guns after school (never hunted animals , but would target shoot) ... yes we had fights in school ,and surprise , we didn't shoot at people

any who , guns have been around a long long time

well a great way to start would be , i dont know , maybe this thing a lot of humans have that is called a voice ... and then they could call out , hey we are the police
if they dont shoot in your direction , that is your first hint : )

making eye contact is a great one as well

but as i am just playing devils advocate at this point,
who is to say some one with out a gun is a treat or the protection
after all they might have a bomb , or a really really bad case of farting gas , etc etc etc

they are just using there head and words to disarm the problem
and my hat off to those cops
