WTH is going on? Now we have a shooting in Utrecht in a tram. A Turkish dude simply opening fire and shooting at people.
We hardly ever have such things in my country so this is quite shocking. Likely a terrorist act.
Everything in the Province Utrecht (it's both a city AND a province named that way) is on high alert.
Let's pray there won't be more incidents...

Yes, me too! They had a photo of the alleged killer/shooter. Police asked people for photos around that area. I guess that means we are still a reasonably 'big brother is watching you"-free country? What I understand most of the US and UK is covered by cameras. I guess not so much over here.
In any case, hope they find the dude.

not so much in the US either, except for private citizens paying for security at their residence or business.

There is much more survelliance than anyone wants to admit. Your ISP is being traced for everything to say and do and who you contact. Google saves ALL emails from Hangouts and all phone calls made ..... Facebook is deleting all accounts that say they don't believe today's shooting by the Turk happened. Add to that all the police and government monitoring and you all should be afraid of every word you speak and print.

I dont happen to believe we have to watch out for things that we consent to have monitored and which are for entertainment to begin with. Consent to it or dont, and thats pretty simple in terms of 'watching out' for anything.

The minute a word is typed or spoken that involves a SECOND party, there is risk someone else will find out. Its a part of life, and not something that makes me too paranoid.

I'm also not too paranoid about monitoring. Having an overdose of cameras everywhere in the streets would bother me. I understand a need to protect against terrorist stuff and making it easier to identify criminals, but it also means they can follow any Tom Dick & Harry. Delicate issues.
Drones are another issue that concerns me, esp people being able to buy drones online for fun. My son had one and that thing can go so high that you don't see it, yet it makes crystal clear video and/or photos.
There goes your privacy out the window with what you do in your very own backyard... That's the thing I do NOT like.

I feel that is vastly different from monitoring internet. Internet can be used to reach large groups of people all over the world, a drone not so much. It can be used to create an uproar, stir up hate and anger, and get people to do crazy things.
I suppose the serious stuff concerning this happens on the dark web, but if they'd allow everything on platforms like FB things easily get out of hand.
Take something like the NZ shooting. In a way I have mixed feelings about accounts being closed over this on social media, but in one sense it's a good thing. People sometimes seem to go straight back to their reptilian brain and lose sight of all normal common sense. Group dynamics get people sucked into things they'd normally wouldn't get sucked into.

I do not believe Google and so on monitor and save everything. From what I've gathered they monitor and search for certain words and red flags that could be indicative of terrorist attacks and/or criminal acts.

Terrible stuff. Utrecht, Christchurch, another shooting in the Philippines. People are killed just because they have a different belief. Maybe the incident in Utrecht was an act of revenge
