Predicted to be(come) the new epidemic, but I think pandemic: forward head position.
Because we are bent over our laptops, tablets, phones way too long every day, year in year out. Even our kids grow up doing that, so go figure what the biggest problem of mankind is going to be.
Not just going to be, already is!
Physiotherapist and chiropractors get to deal with this an awful lot and this afternoon in town I was sat down to have a cappuccino at the outdoors of a restaurant, watching people. And a few minutes observation learns that more than half of population has forward head position, probably more. When you notice it it is quite scary as this is only the beginning.

It's not just phones, laptops etc, but also sitting in front of a PC. You are automatically inclined to move forward to get closer to what you are looking at. So behind the PC you also tend to move your head forward.
Now think of the average amount of time per day people spend on their laptops, phones, tablets, PC, reading books, typing bent over their keyboard...
Then think of our offspring doing this from a very young age onward and what that will lead to...

Not only does it look stupid, I sometimes think some people look like birds or chickens, hihi, but it can cause all kind of issues. Not just with neck and back and shoulders, also with the brain functions.
Basically nerves that feed ALL functions of the body shoot out from in between the neck vertebrae, the lower half to serve the body, the top part to serve the brain. This includes eye function & vision, hearing (tinnitus and what not), vertigo, proper working of the brain and hypothalamus, hypofyse and so on.
That all can get scr*wed up by forward head position.

may be good to take this into consideration, pay heed to your position and do regular chin tucks at least!

Good point! Last night I saw for the first time an inventor selling the "Neck Hammock",it's designed to cup your head when you're laying down and put gentle traction on your neck as it hangs from a doorknob and of course you can easily adjust the height.
I'm not to wild on laying on a floor but it wouldn't be too tough to make something so you could use it in bed.I'm sure some of us have stuff hanging above our beds already  laugh

Interesting observation.

Another thing I have noticed is "The Clench"
The Clench is caused by over use of phones or game system controllers.

I, myself get "Mouse Fingers"
Mouse Finger is is often combined with "Wrist Callous".
Where you get a callous forming where your wrist contacts the desk.

Then there is "Screen Eye"
Screen Eye is where you get so used to viewing a screen, the real world passes by and you don't know it.

There is also:
"Phone Ear"
"Gamer Drool"
"Monitor Eye"
"Chair Fatigue"
"Signal Roaming"

I also have to be careful with my mouse hand, especially since I'm hypermobile and am behind the PC a lot. But even if it'd become a problem, it's nothing like forward head position, nor are the other things you mention.
That affect your entire body AND the brain functions... It really is a serious problem and will only get worse with time.
At least we grew up not doing these things, but our kids...

Oh, if someone lifts your head when lying down and very subtly puts a bit of traction on it!! It feels SO good! But quite logical, the head weighs some 7 kilos and we carry that around all day, and if it is mostly in front of your torso it literally hangs on muscles that aren't supposed to hold it that way.
I'm also not keen on laying on a floor, but I think you could indeed come up with something in bed. The head end of my bed would allow for things, it's quite high and got steel bars.

slaphead <--- that may help to put your head back in place, hahaha. You can also use your muscle though? Might be somewhat easier and less painful, hihi.

OT... Interesting subject Crystal. All the more reason to do stretches and take mini breaks when using our phones, laptops, and other things that cause us to be in an unnatural position for an extended time. drinker

Absolutely! And regular chin tucks, hihi. Helps to keep the neck loose. Looks silly to do but it does work! And pay heed when away from these gadgets that your head is where it's supposed to be: above your torso, ears aligned with shoulders.
Not as easy as it sounds, unfortunately, hihi. I have this problem due to my neck injury, not from being bent over gadgets. Thank goodness I can type blind! My mom can't and she's got it from looking at her keyboard when typing for hours on end.

I'm the same way, don't have a problem with typing without needing to look at the keyboard. When I'm using my laptop that is... I do have a harder time when using my phone.

I read somewhere that the skeleton is re modeled every ten years. The bone is remodeled according to the stresses it encounters. For example a certain regular position, over time will actually change the bone structure.
Knees, back, hips and neck are more often affected than other parts.
So I can well believe that millions will be affected as time goes on.

!0 years of hunching over a keyboard and peering at a screen. doesn't do your skeleton much good.

I roll my neck regular, and chin tucks. Just not in public lol

Same for me, that;s why I don't use my phone much, I just can't. It's exactly that position that causes me a lot of grief. If I could do that I could also work ohwell
Fortunately you can install things like WhatsApp and Instagram on a PC :) That's how I use these.

It will definitely change the posture of people. In the old days I remember my mum being a secretary typist and suffered from arthritis eventually in her hands.
It's a similar thing using I phones and tablets. You do stoop forward and it makes the thumbs ache ohwell

Oh, yes, the poor fingers! And I guess in those days there was only mechanical type writers, that's even worse. I learnt to type on one of those too, long time ago, hihi.
My fingers suffered a lot when I had to edit my book and had a deadline from the publisher. I had to type for hours on end every day for a month. By the end of that month my fingers were so painful! If I had to do that regularly, like when being a full time author, I'd get in serious trouble. Meaning I never will be a full time author, hahaha.

Having to change ink tapes. Gosh... things have changed!
