Remembrance Day. Every year at 8 pm on 4 May, the Dutch commemorate civilians and soldiers who have died in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or elsewhere in the world since the outbreak of the Second World War, both in war situations and in peacekeeping missions, with two minutes of silence.
Buses, trains, trams will also stop.

This year it's going to be quite different. No public but our king and queen will go out on the Dam in Amsterdam to put up large wreaths and for a speech.
The PM etc. will also be there.
So it's going to be a solemn and likely very odd remembrance day this year. Normally there's quite a lot of public.

I'm also going to do the 2 minutes silence at 8.00, I always do. Even my kids did when in their teenage years which I thought was quite impressive for teenagers who weren't always easy to deal with :)

Wow... that was very moving. Somehow it seemed to have much more impact as there was no public at all. Just king & queen and 4 other officials and some media.
A totally empty heart of Amsterdam. Now that's something you don't see every day!
It made it feel incredibly solemn. I cried.
