"A good friend of mine used to say, 'This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.' Think about that for a while." - Nuke Laloosh
There are other things that detracted from the game incrementally. The '94 strike was another big factor. The dilution of the league through expansion. The inequity of the league between the Small and Large Markets, ticket prices that rocketed up exponentially and the constant talk about small-market teams moving to the next bigger, better deal all played a part.
But I think the biggest detractor is that people today just don't have the attention span that your need to really enjoy the game...It's a slow-paced event where every pitch plays a minuscule part to the overall picture in a season of 162 games. It's like watching a glacier grow or a stream's inevitable change of direction as it eats into the bank of a turn. I understand that "chicks dig the long ball" but sometimes a simple pitch-out is even more monumental. Most people can't grasp that...and so they miss out on the beauty of the game.
