They usually only attack when surprised -or really hungry -otherwise they tend to avoid humans unless habituated. The noisemakers usually get them to go in a different direction or just not be as surprised so they don't feel threatened.

Why do they have to be so cute?

Thanks! And yes, they look cute, especially polar bears and these are even worse, hihi. The other day I was listening to David Attenborough saying polar bears sometimes actually hunt human beings!?!

Yes, I remember a news item from about five to ten years ago. About a dozen rich Public School pupils went to the Arctic for their school trip and one of them was killed and possibly eaten, when a Polar bear attacked their camp.

That was on over here in the UK, years ago when I was a kid. Not seen it since I was about 12 years old Cat.:sunglasses:

Having spent a number of years, living in
Alaska grizzly country...

Avoid the tourist crap...
Bear bells... Sold under the guise,
that the noisy bell will ward off a bear.
However, just like Pavlov's Dog, bears
learn to associate the bell with food.

Less enlightened humans carry food
into bear country.

In bear country, YOU are in the food chain,
and on the menu.

The only Grizzly bears I've seen were in Yellowstone.

I was only close enough to really see details on Grizzly once in Alaska and once in Montana, like Rock said you better know your place and have some common sense.
I did have a guy tell me that his dog saved his *** from one once; Grizz killed the dog but gave the guy enough distance to get to his snow machine........
