A three kiloton equivalent explosion has destroyed the port and large parts of Beirut in Lebanon, leaving thousands injured and over three hundred thousand of its inhabitants homeless. The death toll will certainly rise beyond the hundred deaths so far reported.

the government ordered port officials put under house arrest amid speculation that negligence was to blame. The investigation is focusing on how 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical used in fertilizers, came to be stored at the facility for six years, and why nothing was done about it. Fueling speculation that negligence was to blame for the accident, an official letter circulating online showed the head of the customs department had warned that the huge stockpile of ammonium nitrate stored in a hangar in the port was a danger, and asked judicial officials for a ruling on a way to remove it. It had been confiscated from a ship in 2013.

The gov't has dissolved itself over the protests due to the explosion. As far as I know Lebanon has no gov't now. Next few weeks should be interesting. Wish we could rid of ours that easily. We should've kicked them to the curb after 911. In Lebanons case it was carelessness. In the case of 911 it was a deliberate act of terrorism conducted by our own gov't and Israel and nothing happened to them.
