In my country we also hear of suicides due to socio-economic compulsions! Farmers taking this ultimate step, not getting a price for their crops and not being able to pay up the loans, is commonplace here! There are student suicides too, due to similar reasons! How will you go about explaining these?

That is sad Kevin...

And I feel ANGRY! You know wot.... if you protest for such acts which were influenced by the policies of the state; you can be booked for sedition! But, anyways, that's not the topic of this thread!

I disagree. The topic is about suicide. Is it poverty and lack of hope for your countrymen/women that pushes them over the edge?

The incidents that I mentioned are ONLY & ONLY due to the neo=liberal policies of the government. These incidents have nothing to do with simply poverty. India is mostly an agro-economy, hence yeah a lot is under the purview of the unorganised sector.
That being said, there are other cases of suicides that can be linked to fragile mental health. Even when, we study these cases closely, we link a substantial number of them to societal conditions that were beyond the control of the victims!
According to me, suicide attempts, suicide should not be bracketed with suicidal tendencies. Once we start noticing early behavioral changes they all need to be addressed medically. However, this is seldom the reality! Mental health is still considered exclusively of physical health in most developed countries, whereby we only feel sorry for the victim! Health plans, insurance and budget seldom include mental health!

Now I should address the question you raised in this thread.
Yes, we are allowed to talk about suicide. How should we talk about it? Well, very, very factually. Just as we talk about any other death caused from an accident or illness. We must stop weaving our own perceptions about the cause of suicide, just as we do in other deaths. That, according to me, would help us take mental illness more seriously and address it just like other critical physical illnesses. The mind is as much, if not more, a part of our body as the heart, lungs or kidneys.

I 100% agree. For some reason people have unneccesary shame for mental health issues. Perhaps it stems from the 'Survival of the fittest' mentality.
But the reality is, everyone has trauma, mostly unresolved and they get stuck at some point in their lives with not knowing how to deal with it.

Yes. Identify, Accept, Treat. That's the only way we can save these beautiful lives from an unnatural end.

And educate...

Indeed. That should be the first priority.

If we take each case discussed in this very important thread, they ought to be seen differently in their own merit. Just as all cardiac arrests cannot be bracketed, so also, all suicides ought not to be bracketed. The very attempt of simplification is criminal and prevents us from going to the cause.
If we go down medical history and its development we'll find that only a minuscule amount of money was spent in the research of mental health! We have always separated mind from the body, though they are inseparable and ought to be treated likewise.

Spot on.
