Today is the day we commemorate all who lost their lives during WW2 in the fight for our freedom, and the victims who fell in that time.

Since there was a vast number of allied forces from all countries involved, we commemorate them all: the Dutch, Canadian, British, Scottish, American etc.

Most Dutch people still feel it's important we have our Remembrance Day, including young people. (which surprised me!)
I feel it's great as we should never forget how easily people can come to taking freedom away from others. Something that has extra meaning today in our current situation.
On Remembrance Day we always use the phrase:

FREEDOM CAN NOT BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED

We all commemorate this on different days, but regardless, we indeed we should not forget.

Last year they erected a memorial here on the island for an American B-24m bomber, 9 statues for each of the crew. They all died.
Many people were not happy about it as they felt these weren't Dutch, likely didn't even know where they were, so why not commemorate the Dutch -our own people- who gave their lives?
I did and do not agree. I feel that especially because they lost their lives over a country -shot down by Germans- that wasn't theirs, possibly not knowing where exactly they were, is reason enough to not forget them.

They crashed and died on April 5 1945, meaning 1 month before the war ended.

For me commemorating concerns all who fought for our allied freedom and died.

This is the memorial, it's the names of the crew in soundwaves and turned a quarter, done to make it personal as there weren't the photos of each crew member.
It's located on a lower dike in the middle of fields. It's set up to cover 33,5m which was the wingspan of the airplane.

I hope someone put flowers there today.

It is an unusual concept, isn't it!
I don't think there'd be much difference in pronunciation but even if there is, I doubt anyone is going to analyse it, hihi.
