bands no one else you meet knows
That's very subjective.
Many of the people I meet listen to radio stations.
I don't.
I've met people who don't know Pink Floyd, BB King or Krokus.
I often find bands I like which I never knew about.
Most of the music I play regularly are new to people I meet.
I post the music I play here and most of the time, people have no idea who it is. But I post it often enough they recognize the name but never listen to it.

It all depends on the type of music they listen to.
My gf used to listen to country radio.
She met me and her tastes changed.
She now likes blues and soft rock.
She even likes some metal.
She hated Pink Floyd, she only heard the same two songs over and over again on the radio.
I played some albums and now she loves Pink Floyd.
She hated metal, I played selected songs and she finds she like them.
Rap is not music its publisized anger.
Hip Hop is okay but not a first choice.
I like the blues, light rock and instrumentals.
I can tolerate classical but not for long.
I jam out to metal about 1x per month.
My passion right now is the blues, guitar blues.
