Halloween is October 31.
Some of the TV channels I used to watch offered 31 days of Halloween horror movies.
That's where the Shocktober theme came from.

Yeah, then it makes sense. Just that Halloween isn't something that was celebrated here. It began to come up some 15 yrs ago. But nothing like what I've seen in shops & supermarkets in the UK, and likely the same in the US.

In any case...
Don't Speak it's what I consider a B or C movie, but it's an okay watch.

Halloween was a much bigger deal in the 1970's, when I was a kid.

Halloween got really big for me when I had kids. (mid 1990s)
Till then, meh.
It was really fun dressing them up in homemade costumes.
They looked so darn cute!

Some of the better ones were:
A bag of jelly beans - got my hands on a clear trash bag, filled it with balloons, cut arm & leg holes. What was really funny is when he sat down, a balloon or two would pop...Hahaha!
People handing out candy thought it was a really good costume!

Did one kid in a box wrapped in Christmas paper with a bow on his head - He went as a Christmas Present! People loved that idea too.

A friend of mine at work spent a thousand dollars on yard decorations to create a maze. He built air assisted coffins with dummies, and lots of ...scary... ghoulish but tactful body parts. He even invested in a sound system with creepy sounds. The kids loved going to his house for candy.
He also held some very cool Halloween parties for us adults.

I don't really watch scary movies anymore. When I was a kid, "The Birds" and "devil Dog: Hound of Hell" scared me. Those movies are tame now.

I'm not really into Halloween itself anymore.
No parties, no handing out candy, no decorations.
But...I do love watching horror and monster movies during October.

I've attended Haunted House attractions in the past, quite a few.
Did the haunted cornfields and haunted hayrides.
Haven't been in years.

With COVID restrictions lifting slightly this year I expect more people will be holding limited Halloween parties. Might even see some trick or treaters this year.

Anyone planning a Halloween event this year?

The Birds

I dunno Cat, I still think The Birds is good horror.
Never really cared much for Devil Dog. A bit too hokey for me.

I watch a lot of movies and a lot of those are horror movies.
I'm kinda numb to it now but when I first started watching horror movies I hated most of them, especially the slasher movies. Now I find most slasher movies funny or very stupid.

I do understand many people don't really like horror movies. They watch a few and it scares them.
This Shocktober thread is more geared towards the people who like to watch horror movies.
Plus, there are some horror movies which are way to twisted even for me. Not scary but depraved of class. Gore/Torture is a genre I don't really watch, I have them but mainly for people visiting who want to see it. I usually find something else to do.

Lately (last 10 years or so) horror movies suk more than good. There are a few but compared to the number of horror movies released, a very low ratio are worthy of the time to watch it. Most are just plain stupid.

Just remembered a favorite Shocktober movie I like.
Deadtectives (2018)
Its funny with bits of horror thrown in with a happy...ending?
Not really scary but really funny.

A movie that scared me for life... "Children of the Damned and Village of the Damned" from the 1960's.

Both of those are wonderful horror movies.
Village of the Damned (1995) is a remake but the original is so much better.
Kinda like I Spit on Your Grave aka Day of the Woman (1978). There's been multiple movies but the original is better.

You might like The Children (2008)
Two families gather at an upscale English estate in late December. Elaine (Eva Birthistle) and her sister, Chloe (Rachel Shelley), along with their husbands and children, are set for a weekend of family bonding and winter fun. But when they arrive, one of the children becomes sick and all of the children exhibit strange behavior. The adults don't realize the disturbing truth until it's too late: The children have contracted a disease that has turned them into brutal, psychotic killers.

Oh, Alfred Hitchcock The Birds... Scared the hell out of me!
If memory serves there were seagulls in there too, and crows I think.
I hate seagulls. They give me the creeps. Possibly partly to do with that movie. And I live near the sea so there's lots of 'em here.

Perhaps one of the reasons horror movies don't scare me anymore is the fact I love to watch "Making Of" specials. Plus, the DVD extras can be fun.

Its interesting to me to hear what the actors think of their characters.
I'm also into anything stunt or special effects.
I like matte painting.
I like the art of foley. (sound effects)
I even enjoy hearing about the effects different filters and shadows elicit.
Most of all, I love the makeup and creature effects, from models to puppets to animatronics and costume effects.

Most movie effects companies have websites which show not only the props they create but how they were made.
http://www.stanwinstonschool.com/blog/pumpkinhead-from-concept-to-creation
http://www.afxstudio.net/creatures

Plus there's production company websites
Full Moon Features
Ghost House Pictures
Blumhouse Productions
Hammer Film Studios
Ghost House Pictures
Amblin Entertainment
Twisted Pictures
Platinum Dunes
Vertigo Entertainment

I once did a huge post on a forum for Halloween on how to get movie horror effects and using makeup. 99% of the photos I posted were at photobucket and when photobucket stopped hosting for free, the images went dead so I deleted the thread. Pissed me off! I hate photobucket now.

In st louis there's Johnny Brock's halloween supplies.
http://www.johnniebrocks.com/
They sell the higher quality makeup materials to create some of the movie effects.

There used to be a site called Nightmare Factory
http://www.nightmarefactory.com/
which sold full scale animatronics along with high quality masks and makeup supplies.

Now there's sites like
FrightProps
http://www.frightprops.com/
Where you can find a wide range of Halloween stuff.
http://www.frightprops.com/props/halloween-decorations/clowns-and-circus.html
They even offer sound effects. (foley art)

I figure once you know how a horror movie is made, it is much less scarier.
Like any movie, if you forget you are watcing a movie, its a good movie.
When the effects are done well, it doesn't pull you out of the movie, it enhances the quality. When the effects suk, it breaks the 'movie effect'.

Last night I watched Silence of the Lambs.... I saw it a long time ago. I’d forgotten about the references to things that happened in West Virginia, my state, and Ohio. Glad I had the chance to see it again.

Then I watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the newer version....not as good as the original IMO.
I do like the ones that are based on true events better. Very interesting! Not sure what’s going to be on later tonight.....

Just unzipped another 40 movies for Shocktober.
I start the playlist about 8am and run it till about 11pm.

I recently acquired
Offspring 3: Darlin' (2019) c andrews m bateman l canny
Found at a Catholic hospital filthy and ferocious, feral teenager Darlin' is whisked off to a care home run by The Bishop and his obedient nuns, where she's to be rehabilitated into a "good girl" as an example of the miraculous work of the church. But Darlin' holds a secret darker than the "sins" she is threatened with, and she is not traveling alone. The Woman who raised her, equally fierce and feral, is ever present in the shadows of Darlin's psyche and is determined to come for her no matter who tries to get in her way.
A direct sequel to The Woman

Offspring 1: The Family (2009) ~ bluray p mcintosh j butler a hargreaves j ketchum 6.6
Survivors of a feral flesh-eating clan are chowing their way through the locals. Amy Halbard and Claire Carey strive to survive their abduction by the cannibals and save their children. A subplot involving Claire's despicable husband, Steven, gives an opportunity to cleverly compare predatory civilized folk to the appetite-driven primitives.

Offspring 2: The Woman (2011) p mcintosh bg fuller la carter 5.8
Raised by wolves, the vulnerable last survivor of a cannibalistic tribe bathes wounded in a river somewhere in the lush woods of North-east Coast, where she used to roam free. In the eyes of the misogynistic lawyer, Chris, the naked beast-like savage seems to be the perfect trophy for his home; however, is there a place for a feral, flesh-eating primitive among civilized people? In the following days--bent on domesticating the untamed female by breaking her will--the sadistic man will make the woman his project, as Chris' dysfunctional family struggles to keep the proud predator in captivity. Although, pretty soon, no restraints, no training--and, certainly, no male supremacy--will be no match for the raging woman's raw and merciless retaliation. Can they escape from the monster's fury?

Its a brutal, bloody and viscous set of films some find difficult to watch.
