Just out of curiosity, yep, I'm always interested in how things go elsewhere...
Are supermarkets opened on 1st Christmas Day? And other shops?
Or is everything closed?
The same for New Year's Day (Jan 1st).

I wonder about that as from what I understand things are open 24/7 in the US for instance. Is this any different with Christmas or does it very per state/region?

And of course the same for other countries.

Can you still get that one thing you forgot on 1st Christmas Day and/or New Year's Day?

Over here the supermarket is closed on both 1st Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
The day before Christmas it closes early, same on 2nd Christmas day and NYE.
Always something to bear in mind when doing shopping, but it's always been that way so in that sense I'm used to it.

Stores close on Christmas and other holidays. You're thinking of big cities in the United States. There are actually small towns in the US.

Near me...this year and most recent years, all grocery stores are open on Christmas but with modified hours, usually a later opening start time.
Nearly every 'store' is open on New Year's Day and New Year's Eve unless it is government or bank related (banks, post offices, etc...).
Recently, I've not seen many grocery stores that are 'closed' on any holiday.

On a different view, most stores that are open on Christmas are usually staffed by people without family plans or families. So, you are actually more prone to meet someone available for dating that is working on Christmas.
Many stores set schedules to allow the workers with families to have that day off.

In my town all grocery stores and Shopping Malls are closed Christmas Day and New Year... along with Govt offices and Banks ... these are statutory holidays, in other words , paid holidays..
The rest of the week retail stores open later and close earlier .. must mention most business establishments are closed during the week .... some open on 27th Dec and work till 31st .... most firms this year will be shut down from Dec 26 till Jan 1st ... work resumes on Jan 2nd... the week off is known as the "holidays "... Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all Mingle funsters..

An interesting idea to find a potential date, haha.
A good thing they allow people with families to have time off!

Boxing Day used to be the same here, no shops opened. But that has changed and most are now open, although likely not the smaller privately owned shops. But supermarkets for sure.

It is, however, a national holiday so office workers for instance all have both Christmas days off.

Wow, an entire week off! I think it used to be that way over here as well, longer time ago, but it cost companies too much to close business for that long.

Thanks for all the feedback!
Interesting to read that most everywhere they take Christmas into account and even think about people with families :)

In Germany, most shops close their doors at lunchtime on Christmas Eve, and are closed on Christmas Day and St.Stephen's Day. Petrol Stations along the autobahn remain open though, but charge a bomb for food.

In my home village, restaurants are open every day though, because we rely on tourists.
